Welcome to the forum bos. You should find a lot of material and views on churchill here. Some like him, some resent him. The thing is that he was the inspiration of the British in a time they were primed to fall. He was brilliant man with words and worked with them as Michaelangelo worked with a brush. I compare him to Benjamin Franklin. Extremely witty, very intelligent and an full of all kind of folksy wisdom. Churchills biggest asset was his charm. Without it, I don't think that FDR could or would get the Lend Lease program started. Just as Franklin charmed the French into supporting the US in the war with Britain (we call it the revolutionary war, I think you folks might call it the colonial rebellion), so did Churchill convince FDR and the US Congress to aid Britain. America was 88% against joining the war and had no idea to help either side. Their view was to let Europe work out her problems. They didn't want to get dragged into another world war. I personally don't think WWII would have turned at the same without Churchill. Many here would disagree but if you consider that his brilliant workmanship with FDR got Britain 50 destroyers that they needed desparately to counter the u-boat stranglehold over British import and exports it is possible that Britain could have been choked by lack of supplies to the island, lack of fuel for heating and for fuel, etc. Britain's situation being surrounded by water made them very vulnerable to shipping loses. It was getting to the point nations would quit shipping to Britain because it is just not worth losing expensive ships for. No iron, no materials for ammunition, no food supplement, no heating oil, etc. There is a thread where we have debated whether Germany could have invaded Britain. Many passionate arguments on that but if the shipping loses had been sustained, I don't think that Britain could have recovered. Something had to give there. That's a Yank's take on it. Hope that helps.
Hi, Welcome to the Forum. Just two words tell it all. When Churchill became First Lord the signal sent out to all units of the Royal Navy was simply, 'Winston's back'. Cheers, Gerry
I expect you have done a 'Google' search on Winston Churchill which throws up a number of very good sites about him. If you are in the UK you will find that your local library will have a section devoted to books about him, The biography by Roy Jenkins will give you plenty of information about his life and his politics. Good luck

Just as Franklin charmed the French into supporting the US in the war with Britain (we call it the revolutionary war, I think you folks might call it the colonial rebellion. We call it the American War of Independence. And if we hadn't been fighting France at the time we would have whupped your backsides. Watcha Bos, just try and find all of the different threads on the forums, then PM individuals you want to ask questions of. We're all pretty friendly. Other than that try and get a few books off amazon or something. Churchill is a major subject to cover, so good luck. By the way, Churhcill was the bee's knees, dog's doodahs and cat's pyjamas.
We call it the American War of Independence. I Call it the last English Civil War Hello Boz, Churchill. Top Bloke. None better. have fun. Adam.
