    Some refs. on Winssen

    I have seen a few refs in various war diaries to Regiments returning to billets in Winssen, so some research on who was where then / when and what / who (else) was there (civilians etc)...

    Located a few miles west-northwest of Nijmegen...

    SRY - 6th October 1944
    Regt was relieved by 4 COLDSTREAMS (Armd). We went into a rest area in billets around WINSSEN, 3 miles due West of NIJMEGEN, almost on the river bank.
    C.O. took 2 I/C of the Coldstreams round our posns.
    C.O. went to 82 Airborne Div HQ to bid them farewell. They are most appreciative of all we have done to help them.


    SRY - 9th October 1944
    Regt left WINSSEN

    28th October 1944 - 61st Reconnaissance Group - "B" Squadron moven to Winssen - https://www.facebook.com/1111553955544741/posts/2137466896286770/

    SRY - 2nd November 1944
    We were relieved by the 4th/7th R.D.G. on the Island and took over billets at WINSSEN. The Colonel went round squadron areas and visited Brigade. Infantry training started for A1 Echelon under Lt M. Wall (5th Bn – Coldstream Guards).

    Date 3rd – 9th Place WINSSEN
    ‘The Regiment still remains at WINSSEN. It has rained continuously since the beginning of the month so the unit’s first break since the 6th June comes at a good time. Despite the weather, many games of football and hockey have been played.

    SRY - 5th November 1944
    Church service in WINSSEN church in the morning. The Brigade Major paid RHQ a visit. Possibility of a move.

    Middlesex Regiment - By the 28th (November 1944) they had evacuated the island and concentrated near Winssen.
