Wing Commander Ramaswamy Jayaram

Discussion in 'Burma & India' started by U311reasearcher, Apr 30, 2010.

  1. I am hoping that somebody may be able to help me.

I am seeking as much info as can be found (past and present) on Wing Commander Ramaswamy Jayaram.

All I have on him is the following:

Service No 2232 Branch MED No Image Available
Name : Ramaswamy Jayaram Rank Wing Commander Date of Birth: 11 Oct 18

Date Commissioned 16 Mar 43 Service End No Details

I am seeking this individual for my grandfather who was with 10 sqn based in Burma, they flew together and my grandfather would like very much to know how to contact him if at all possible.

    Thanks so much!

Hi U311 - I couldn't find the WGCDR in the London Gazette but I had a bit more luck with the Flight Global Archive - training school | air force | ground training | 1959 | 1580 | Flight Archive

This might explain why the Indian reference you provided didn't have an end date for his service. He was still going strong in 1959 when he was a Squadron Leader and he must have served for some time after to get his next promotion.

    More info added:

Service Record for Wing Commander Ramaswamy Jayaram 2232 MED [www.bharat-rakshak.com] contains a link for more info on the WGCDR which includes him being the president of the AFCME up to October 1962 - List of Commanding Officers for AFCME [www.bharat-rakshak.com]

AFCME = Air Force Central Medical Establishment (my guess) - this link contradicts itself for the meaning of the acronym in the text it is titled Armed Forces CME but the image clearly states Air Force CME - Armed Forces Central Medical Establishment - Golden Jubilee (1947-2007) [www.bharat-rakshak.com]

He gets a few more mentions, including in the initial flight training memoirs of an IAF Air Marshal in the 1950s - The magnificient men in their flying machines : Air Marshal S Raghavendran [www.bharat-rakshak.com] -

"One of the first things I did on arrival was to report 'sick' and explain to the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) that my left leg muscles had been sort of atrophied due to the 21 day plaster cast and that I should be excused from parades and sports till I could recover. I told him that this was due to developing water in the knee. Flt .Lt Jayaram, the SMO, immediately said that if I had water in the knee, I was disqualified from being in the flying branch!! I quickly blabbered to him that I was O.K. and ran out of the office before he pinned me down. We had an even more interesting interaction when I was Commanding Bareilly and he was the PMO in Central Air Command. I will save it for another article."

Seeing as how the AFCME has just had it's Diamond Jubilee (1947-2007) it might be worth contacting them to see if they have contact details for personnel such as ex-Presidents of the Establishment.

    Many thanks!

I will go over the material and cross my fingers, this has been much appreciated and hopefully my end results will find him still with us so that my grandfather may communicate with him.

    Thanks Again

I suggest you approach Sqn Ldr (Retd) Rana TS Chhina by email at the Centre for Armed Forces Historical Research, USIofI, Rao Tula Ram Marg, New Delhi. He is THE authority on the history of the IAF and will I am sure point you in the right direction. Google for address etc. Good luck.
