I am looking for help finding records for Frank Windle during the war. He was 'something medical' and served with the RN. His 'Official number ' on the RN Auxiliary medal roll (ADM 171/72) is X6058. His medal was sent to ‘Care R.N.B. Devonport.

The rest of the entry is shown as ditto for the man above
Who is ON 5332 Wilson N J , Medal Number 49423, Rank L.S.B.A. RNSABR, Medal Issued Date 10.3.1941 Issued to Whom S.J.A.B

I understand the he was with the Royal Navy Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve
and so his rank was as a Leading Hand.

    Is this correct?

Wondering why the medal was awarded in 1941.

Where do I look for further information about his service?

    Any help welcomed.

    Robin

Frank Windle of Barnoldswick was a pal of my father and fellow founding member of the Northern Cavern and Fell Club in 1928. He was an active caver and when the Cave Rescue Organisation was founded on the initiative of the NCFC he was a rescue warden and improved the stretcher kept at SJAB in Settle. We believe he was with the SJAB after the war

LSBA is Leading Sick Bay Attendant. The medal was sent to Cdre (Commodore), not Care, RNB Devonport. The medal referred to is the RNASBR Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, hence the seemingly obscure award date of 10.3.41. I think this was for 15 years service. SJAB is St John's Ambulance Brigade (I think you probably already know this) from whom the RNASBR were recruited.

Thanks Tim. Makes sense now. 15 years takes him back 1926 and fits with being an active outdoors man in the run up to the formation of NCFC by a group of very experienced young men. FW lived in Barnoldswick.

Ps Looking at my notes ... one of his family said he was awarded a medal by SJAB. Could have been this ... often the oral history is wrong but right in essence.

I think it is quite possible that he also had a medal (probably also for Long Service) from the SJAB as he could well have been in the SJAB and the naval reserve at the same time prior WW2. Perhaps the SJAB have records.

Thanks Tim. With the family stories about his life ( very limited but useful) I was in touch with SJAB. As family details were requested I've passed the information on to his grandson. Waiting to hear what he has found. His dresses in my father's diaries show that he had moved to near the Christie Hospital Manchester in 1938 and then touring 1939 to SB Res, RN Auxiliary Hospital Barrow Gurney.
Your input has helped me tie the clues together.

    Many thanks
    Robin

PS I am writing up a chapter about the founders of the NCFC focussing on who they were and what they did. The old boys were a background to my early years and they had great reunions through the 1980's. My notes are being deposited at the British Caving Library along with scans of many original documents in my father's papers.
