Frederick Harper is on CWGC website. He died in Formosa on 9/8/1945 whilst being held as a POW by the Japanese. Formosa was a Japanese occupied island that had been part of China till 1895, it became Chinese again after the Japanese surrender. It is possible like other non-UK POW he was cremated soon after his death. Scrowl to the bottom of the link about a US Army soldier: Cigoi, Sgt. Walter F. - Bataan Project 4 He was initially buried at Daichoku Military Cemetery and was reburied in Hong Kong 24/7/1947 which was then a British Colony. There are other POW shown as dying there. From: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2221090/frederick-arthur-harper Note Daichoku appears to be known by the Chinese name of near Taihoku; which is now in Taipei Province and the capital city of the Republic of China. War Crimes trials were held in Hong Kong, between 17 November and 11 December 1947. I have not looked at these links. Daichoku was the site of the main camp on Formosa (now often called Taiwan), with eight sub-camps and: From: POW Research Network Japan | Researches | POW Camps outside Japan Proper A little detail: From: Never Forgotten :: The Story of the Taiwan POW Camps and the men who were intered in them. Note the POW's liberation is details here: From: Aberdeen Medals

The photo is actually a still of film footage shot by Sgt George Laws of the Army Film and Photographic Unit which shows men of 4 Commando embarked in LCAs of 500 Assault Flotilla. The man has been variously identified as a Canadian (by many Canadians who insist this footage shows Juno Beach – it definitely doesn't) and various other names offered without any evidence. As in the screenshot Owen posted, the Imperial War Museum did identify him as "Sergeant William James Cresswell ("Jim", born 24 May 1919) of the East Surrey Regiment" although that identification has been removed from the film information now. I'm unsure about the pencil identification on the photo dope sheet in Owen's post. As this is very definitely 4 Commando, presumably the East Surry Regiment was his original unit before joining the commandos. If indeed it is even him. The full film can be viewed here: LANDINGS ON 'SWORD' BEACH, 6 JUNE 1944 (PART 4) [Allocated Title]
