What kind of tanks did Rommel use in NA?

    Hi,

My grandfather was a tank driver in the 7th Hussars and I'm illustrating his memoir. I'd like to be as accurate as possible.

He only describes 'Panzers' and 'Tigers' but no further details. I would love to know, specifically between Rommel arriving in North Africa and December 1941 which tanks Rommel was employing. I would hate to draw the wrong one.

Also if you have any tips for appropriate photo archives that would be amazing too.

    Thank you!

P.S: He was captured at Sidi Rezegh and then put on the Jason/Sebastiano Venier/Jantzen.

Despite his mention of Tigers, there were no Tiger tanks in North Africa by the end of 1941.

This one random website I just googled gave a breakdown of "The German tanks included 69 Panzer IIs, 136 Panzer IIIs (half of which were new models with the short 50mm gun and half older models with the original 37mm gun) and 31 Panzer IVs, at this point armed with a short 75mm howitzer."

You should be able to find plenty of pictures. Remember to search for German tanks during Operation Crusader.

They also utilized as many captured vehicles (both armored and thin-skinned) as soon as they could put their hands on them. With the supply line severely stretched, being harassed by submarines and aircraft based out of Malta and other in-range British bases, and priority going to the ever growing inferno on the Eastern Front, they couldn't be too choosy.
