Battle of the River Plate was on film 4 the other night, saw a little bit of that. Before that the last one I watched all the way through I think was Holocaust, the 1970's mini series which I have on DVD

Battle of the River Plate is definitely a film to watch, over and over.

The realism is unbelievable. It's hard to believe it was filmed in the 50's

Downfall... I really disappointed with the lack of action. But I think the movie has some good side. Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler are look like the real one in this movie:lol:

I see the actor who played Hitler in Downfall and always think of a guy I used to work with, loader driver, Dusty Miller. Spitting image. :icon-mrgreenbandit:

I have never understood how they could name that movie after the book. They essentially took a single paragraph out and expanded it expotentially.
The book was a good, educational read. The movie was...bleh.

The snot nosed kid was anoying and when will Hollywood realize that not everyone outside of Amerika speaks with an english accent.

I liked the k98 koenig had and the scene with the Pz IIIs and the fire teams hammering the Russian assault. Didn't understand why they cgi'd the HS 129 as a bomber should have been Heinkels.

    It was mediocre at best.

On a recent trip back to Finland I picked the DVD of the film Talvisota (Winter War). Made in 1989, it is the most expensive Finnish movie ever made. 3 hours 10 minutes. It tells the story of a group of Finnish reservists called up for manoeuvres just before the Soviet Union launched its' attempted invasion in 1939. While most people think of the Finnish ski-troops and mottis, most of the fighting was as depicted in this film. Heavily outnumbered, lightly armed Finnish soldiers holding back wave after wave of Soviet troops supported by artillery, tanks and aircraft. I am told that the equipment and uniforms etc are very accurate. A very impressive film. I have read criticism that the film lacks a 'story'. But I think that is the realism of this film. The average soldier has no real concept of the 'story' of this war. He just went where he was told and fought until he fell.

Some reviews of the film - Talvisota (1989) - IMDb user comments

    Or "Family at War" ?
    Or "The Boat" ?

I'm just back from seeing Days of Glory (the English title for the French film Indigenes), which is about North African troops serving in the French army in 1943-5. it's an excellent film; parts of it resemble Saving Private Ryan but I think that this may be a deliberate ploy to contrast the treatment of Private Ryan with that of the North Africans. The film persuaded President Chirac to reverse a decision not to freeze the pensions of French colonial veterans when their countries were given independence.

I watched that the other week & not a bad film

"Heimat" is a German TV series . It begins in 1918 with Series 1 and finally ends in 2000.
There are discussions about it online and you may be able to rent the DVD , There are 3 separate series . (Series 1 and 2 are interwar and WW2) . Most of the people who have seen it are enthusiastic . It has been shown on BBC a couple of times .

"Family at War" was a 1970's ? UK Tv series about a Liverpool family . My parents said it really captured the era . I don't know if it's available on DVD . It was available on video .

"The Boat" is another German film . It was both a film and a TV series about a submarine crew . I shall never forget the image of a German U-boat ploughing through the Atlantic to the sound of the crew singing a heavily accented "It's a lonk vay to Tipperary"... I think that this film did get international distribution .

"Germany Year Zero" was made by Roberto Rosselini about 1948 . He took a film crew into the ruins of Berlin , recruited local people and filmed his story . If anyone ever wants to know what Berlin looked like after the war , this is it . Again , one image stays with me : a man taking his little grandaughter for a walk in the ruins of (I think) the Reichskanzlerei .

    And "Hope and Glory"

I do hope that I interest a few people in at least one of these films !

Run Silent Run Deep. Dear god, if I could have done I'd have flushed Clark Gable out of the torpedo tube.

At least Clark Gable actually did serve in WW2 ! (Haven't seen the film though).
