Just finished watching "Above & Beyond" (mini 2006) on cable about Wing Commander Don Bennett who delivered the Hudson bombers across the Atlantic from Newfoundland with commercial pilots. Only one shot fired in the entire movie! Very good show! "Above and Beyond" (2006) (mini)
I'm just back from seeing Days of Glory (the English title for the French film Indigenes), which is about North African troops serving in the French army in 1943-5. it's an excellent film; parts of it resemble Saving Private Ryan but I think that this may be a deliberate ploy to contrast the treatment of Private Ryan with that of the North Africans. The film persuaded President Chirac to reverse a decision not to freeze the pensions of French colonial veterans when their countries were given independence.
EL Alamein: I see why it won many awards in Italy. Watched it while on my treadmill early this morning. Tremendous movie, a different perspective (for me) & highly recommended.
That is most definately something I 'have' to see. Any shops you know that sell it? I don't like buying things over the net. The last film I tried to watch was 'Stalingrad'. Bought it for a fiver from the local market, then was horrified to discover it jumps continously about half way through. :mad111: Before that it was 'The longest day'. I still think band of Brothers is one of the best. But that's just my opinion. I bought it from the gift shop at The Imperial War museum, I had never heard of it before. Marvellous stuff. Not 'gung ho' at all, the tone at the end is almost apologetic as it looks forward to rebuilding devestated Europe. I'll have to get it back from you sometime, Adam...
Kokoda (2006) Ashamed to say I still haven't seen it. Hoping to buy it cheap! Most recent WWII movie seen was The Dambusters.
I recently watched a documentary that I had taped a couple of years ago - 'Sink the Bismark' which was great.
Das Boot last night. I noticed you purchased "In Which we Serve". While seemingly a bit "corny" to some, I never get bored with it. The comraderie and fighting spirit under a good Captain, together with the sentimentality of the home front combine to give you a good account of those dark days.
Hence your Avatar, hey Patrick?! Geoff, I don't think I've ever seen In Which We Serve but I have found Noel Coward's involvement interesting. Really looking forward to it and the other two arriving next month. Now I just have to find that cheap Battle of the River Plate DVD at Kmart again as my video tape version is a bit worn!
