Wish I could get good cider from the UK... We have some pretty good local stuff but all we have from Britain is Strongbow and the like.
It's getting cold now and we have difficult decisions to make, the Husky is having problems getting up. Should we begin the next stage of medication or............. Taken to a warm drink of Peach and Lemon tea with a shot of brandy. See what tonight brings.
I was in New York yesterday and happened on a bar which served Old Speckled Hen on draft. I cannot tell you how rare that is here, so I went in and had one. With the tip it was nine dollars. And it was as watery as the Channel.
"Fings aint wat they used to be". Haven't been in a pub for years used to drink Marstons Pedigree made up the road in Burton on Trent. Last beer I drank was last week, as we have begun "slumming it" due to rising costs. Bought an Extra Special Aberdeen Angus Meat Pie from ASDA Washed it down with a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale. Cutting back on wine because it all tastes the same, seems to come from the massive "Euro vat" factories that appeared in Spain the 80's. They blend wine from lord knows where for supermarkets.
One to get tanked-up on? Rather flavoursome and worthy causes, but perhaps it should come with a caution not to ask for 'that Little Willie pop ........'
What is this like never heard of it before. Canadian Reisling. From Aldi. Labelled Ontario VQA. Couldn't wait, we poached some Salmon in it and drank the rest. Very nice and inexpensive. Will definitely get more.
Couple of these essential 'firewaters' earlier at Lincoln's Christmas Market: with this one saved for 'hair of the dog', perhaps, tomorrow.
Locally brewed lager. Very good. Brewed in the old Dexter Folder factory building The History of the Dexter Folder Company
A little while ago I bought a bottle of Bowmore 12 yo to leave at my parents' because they didn't have a bottle of Scotch. I had a bit of this tonight, but there isn't much of it left because my dad has been slowly sipping away at it! He has however bought a new bottle. Over here that's one of the cheaper Islays one can buy. I imagine it's not very distinguished but that's fine.
Last night with baby deer and red cabbage we had a bottle of 2019 Chateau . Cantemerle Bordeaux Grand Cru It it was great, even at the age of 3 years. We wil lwait for the second bottle until 2024 Stefan.
I had some Calvados for the first time tonight--purely in the interests of historical research, you understand. To deepen my knowledge of the Normandy campaign, or something. The stuff tasted like apple-flavored gasoline. You could run a Sherman all the way to Paris on a full tank of it. I drank a shot 3 1/2 hours ago and I can still feel it.
I would go with the perspective on the calvados experience above. Apfelkorn has its moments too: "Morning Sergeant Major, what's fresh today?" "The boys' Kellerbar visit went wrong, Sir ........." (with apologies to the above figurative venue, well and fondly remembered from my earlier years)
