On a different note, my missus has just prepared Chicken schnitzel and sauerkraut for tea!! Delicious, but come on girl have a think! Surely it should be bangers and mash or bully beef. :D

My father has just sent me a video of him and his wife on the front lawn listening to 40s music. The front of the house is bedecked with bunting and they're at a table beneath a parasol, drinking wine and waiting to see the spitfire come over.

And then the camera pans around and there's not another soul in sight--nobody in the whole street has done anything whatsoever. It's actually a bit eerie.

He was up before breakfast to hoist the flag outside the community centre, but it seems that the community spirit is a little lacking in his corner of Kent.

I've found today rather charming. Certainly more than my cynical self had expected.
A deluge of people online having a rather sweet day remembering an old victory while sharing pictures of relatives, all somehow working in the oddest of circumstances.
Strange bursts of bugling locally, amidst some blaring old-fashioned tunes.
Surprised how many people own proper old Union Jacks & other nation's flags. Might have to do something about that.

I even found a way to make it tanky on Twatter.

Has the Union Jack changed since WWII? I looked around the net and saw something the war flag, which had a different height to length ratio. Is that what you mean?

No, I mean proper wool or linen flags, rather than slightly naff nylon ones.

A church in the Cornish village of Gorran Haven helped the village mark the occasion with a Virtual VE75 celebration. It was well received with lots participating, plenty of bunting, VE teas in people's own gardens, & folk in 40s dress. Some superb video presentations were shared via social media/email/website etc to mark the events that were originally planned nationally. They followed it up with a virtual VE75 Thanksgiving Service on the Sunday. The link is here if you want to take a look.

You might have spotted 101 year old Charles Ward on one of the BBC programmes on Friday telling the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge about his "rum distribution" endeavours on 8th May 1945 while serving with SoE in Greece.

Of course, there was limited time to hear the wider story of his time with the London Irish Rifles from Oct '39 to May '43 and thence with SoE in Algeria, Italy and Greece and then with the Royal Signals until he was demobbed in March '46

Here's a link to an extended interview with Charles:
