I have recently come across a reference to 'WBK Ausland in Berlin'. Can anyone tell me what 'WBK' stands for and what the function was of this organisation. My very quick research suggests that there were a number of WBKs in Germany and that it perhaps has something to do with recruiting - I might of course be completely wrong! best JDKR
Many thanks Mark - so WBK would seem to stand for Wehrbereichskommando. What was the relationship between a WBK and a Wehrkreiskommando? Was WBK Ausland in Berlin - which presumably dealt in some way with foreign soldiers - part of Wehrkreiskommando III? So many questions....! Best John
A Wehrbezirkskommando is a recruitment sub area headquarters, WBK Ausland in Berlin dealt with the registration and call-up to military service of German citizens located in both occupied and neutral foreign countries.
Many thanks. That sounds spot on as the reference concerned a man of German-Dutch parentage who was sent to WBK Ausland in Berlin prior to being 'volunteered' into the Waffen-SS. End of enquiry I think. John
