Thank you for posting this. It is interesting to see how a unit with similar responsibilities to my Fathers RASC unit was operating in NW Europe rather than Italy.

Interestingly, your diary has many references next to the numbers of rounds of shells stating what I assume is the weight. For a considerable period my Fathers unit supplied the 70th Medium Regiment (4.5") but there is not a single reference to weight (if thats what it is) in any entry.

I think I might do a similar post to yours. It is all transcribed into an Excel spread sheet so it should not take too long just a bit fiddly!

Final check on all equipment + waterproofing [??]. Morale very high.

7 June 1944 Holland-on-Sea
Normal training continued. Lt. G.J.D. Dale visited Field Cashier to collect money for men’s pay. All ranks still in high spirits over invasion of continent. Telephone call from Essex & Suffolk district re restriction on heights of lorries. Alert sounded 2310 hrs. Raiders passed at 0045 hrs. 8 Jun 44 – no local incidents.

8 June 1944 Holland-on-Sea
Normal Trg continued. Lt Callan 1526 Arty Pl. RASC (Hy) visited Movement Control Cambridge at 0900 hrs for the purpose of collecting Movement Order for this platoon.
1120 Lt. Callon delivers orders. Platoon to move past S.P. at 0530 hrs 9 June 44.
Senior N.C.O’s called to conference. Platoon confined to Billets & hourly roll-call ordered. All stores packed, vehicles prepared to move.

1500 Padre Brett from 121 Med Regt R.A. called on Platoon. Held impromptu service under trees – appreciated in the main.
1600 Rain cleared up + evening fine.

0425 Unpleasant reveille – location shelled by enemy S.P. gun for 25 minutes – total of 63 shells landed – one motor cycle suffered a direct hit and was written off – three lorries were V.O.R. with punctured radiators and one with damaged propeller shaft – three O.Rs were taken to hospital – two with wounds and one with shock – none were serious.
Remainder of day spent in concerted effort to put all vehicles on road + repair 7 tyres damaged by splinters – morale increased by determination to get revenge via the Artillery Regiments.

0900 Platoon received orders to move from present location to area of PUTTE.
1030 Platoon established in location in vicinity of PUTTE.

31 October 1944
0900 Instructions received to move from present location to area N.E. of HUIJBERGEN.
1130 Platoon established in new location [HUIJBERGEN].
2130 580 rds of 5.5 100 lbs shell and 320 rds of 5.5 80 lbs shell delivered to 121 Med Regt R.A.

 

That's all I've got, except to note that the War Establishment of the Platoon was two officers (a Captain and a Lieutenant) and 104 Other Ranks (2 Sgts, 8 Cpls and 94 Drivers or Privates).

My understanding is that the task vehicles of the company were Dodge 4x2 G.S. 3-ton lorries.
