I second Sensible's post. Great photos and looks like a good re-enactment. Not so sure that the T-70 would have survived an encounter with a long Barrelled Mark IV but that T-34 would even things up no end!!

Excellent photos! Good to see the Hitlerists actually loosing a battle for a change. That T70 looks especially nice. Kubinka sounds like a minimum 2 day event, but probably not before Spring!

Yep, i think it even can't be before spring - because of "before 3 months request" - it will be already spring :)) so if for all that u'll gather and send a request probably better do it in first 2-3 months of year 2008 to get permission to visit there in summer ;) here in Moscow we got very hot summer last years so u can even bathe in the sun :D

Yep it was re-enactment timed to Day of Victory 9th May, not sure its done every year, but author of this photos might did them in 2005 when was 60 years anniversary of Day of Victory and in Kubinka was a number of such plays.

Going back to visiting your area.
Which would be best International Airport to fly too?
How much to rent a small house for a week, to fit family of 5?
How much to rent a car?
Something like Ford Galaxy/VW Sharan or even a mini-bus like VW Caravalle?
What about child seats/booster seats for back of car?

First of all, here is an airport in my town but we have there no interntional flights, so u should flight to Moscow's Sheremet'evo (or Domodedovo) then get on train at evening to my town (only 1 night) and at morning next day u r here :), train costs 2000+ roubles for 1 person for coupe+. I think I probably can arrange a guide in Moscow to help u get on train - there r working my closest friend.
I can provide u a link and u can read it with translate.google.com - I've checked translation, I've rated it as not bad. This is site of local health resort near my town (approximately 50km) that works like sanatorium and like hotel, there can be rent rooms and cottages, here is main link: Ñàíàòîðèé «Êðáñèâî»  — Äîáðî ïîæàëîâàòü, here is link for rooms list: Ñàíàòîðèé «Êðáñèâî»  — Êîòòåäæè, here is link for pricelist: Ñàíàòîðèé «Êðáñèâî»  — Ñòîèìîñòü ïðîæèâàíèÿ (be advised that in section "Charges for accommodation from 25.12.2007" in columns Prices for trips, rub. and Price for 1 seat / entire cottage, rub. there prices in roubles for 1 day). Also 1 pound is 50 roubles, 1 euro is 35 roubles, 1 dollar is 25 roubles.
In short, u can live in health resort in good :) cottage for 6900 roubles per day, in good appartments for 2500 roubles per day.
About car... Feel bad to disappoint u but here we have no firm :frown: where can be rent mini-van or mini-bus, only can be rent passenger car in not good condition :frown: but if u'll pack to visit here I think we can find solution (here can be hired a driver with such mini-van, I'll search for price and write here little later). At least I have my HONDA
Child seats/booster seats: damn me, but they have appeared in Russia only 1 or 2 years ago because there was no laws about such seats, so they r only in a few percents of cars, unfortunately.. :( Now they must be in each car that moving with children but our drivers don't hurry up to buy them... :(

Yeah, wildlife there is good, think best time to visit is mid- and late-spring or any time of summer :) u'll see nature of Russia in full colours.

Let's see hotels... This is link to hotel "Southern" in our town: Ãîñòèíèöà Þæíàÿ ã. Áåëãîðîä, damn google but he cannot translate it thru translate.google.com (damn!!!!), but at least u could copy and paste to google to translate parts of page u need, this is price list: Îòåëü Þæíàÿ ã. Áåëãîðîä - Íîìåðà è öåíû, also google sucks on it . Here is another local hotel "Belogorye": Ãîñòèíèöû, áàçû îòäûõà Áåëãîðîäà: Ãîñòèíèöà Áåëîãîðüå (translated not bad thru google), here is link for pricelist: Ãîñòèíèöû Áåëãîðîäà: Ãîñòèíèöà "Áåëîãîðüå": óñëóãè, here we got 2 other otels but without web-priceslists (but prices there commonly equal to sites provided above).

Not too bad prices , better for a couple than a family.

I'll have to check how much Russian Visas are too.

Effective from 12th February 2007 the fees and service structure for visa processing are as following:

BTW, Owen, is this prices for visas greater than to other countries or not? Interesting to compare prices for visas to other countries. Of course if u have such information.

DAMN! that diplomatic shit, according to this I need to send u an invitaion in paper (what the hell??):
    PRIVATE VISA
    (VISITS TO RELATIVES OR FRIENDS)

If you are going to visit Russia to stay with your relatives or friends you should first obtain an official invitation (Приглашение) and only then apply for a Private visa. We only accept original invitation documents issued by the Ministry of Interior (MI) of the Russian Federation. To obtain such an invitation your relatives or friends will need to present a photocopy of your passport and personal data to the local branch of the MI (ОВИР or ПВС) in Russia. Having received this invitation you should apply to the Consulate submitting the following paperwork:
Current passport which should be valid for a minimum of six months after the expiry date of the visa and has at least one blank page.
Visa application form filled in and printed out from this website only.
One recent passport size photo glued to the indicated space on the application form.
The original invitation only — we do not accept faxes or email copies.

Yes, I can do this, but send invitation in paper sounds for me STUPID... Can anyone tell how it works in other countries?

My sister and brother-in-law are off to Egypt next year, there Visa prices are here.
    EGYPIAN CONSULATE

    Cheaper than Russia.

I saw on Russian Consulate website other EU Nations get Visa to Russia for £25, the UK didn't sign up to that agreement.

01.06.2007. Visa fees for EU citizens to change (except UK, Ireland, Denmark)

Today Russia-EU Visa facilitation agreement comes into force. According to its provisions, visa processing fees are changed, from 01.06.2007 on, for the citizens of the following countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany, Finland, France, Czech, Republic, Sweden, Estonia.

    The fees introduced are:
    • For all types of visa (including multiple entry) for standard processing time — £25.00
    • For all types of visa (including multiple entry) for urgent processing — £50.00
Holders of diplomatic passports of the mentioned countries will not need a visa to enter Russia for 90 days. However these provisions are not valid for the countries which did not sign the Agreement: the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark, as well as Iceland and Norway which are not EU member states and did not sign the Agreement with Russia.

Further information will be available from our website.

Even if a UK Citizen wants to go on a Tourist Visa, we have to supply Confirmation from Travel Agent or Hotel that is approved by Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Russian .
    Russian Consulate

Not looking very easy to visit is it?

To visit an Eastern Front battlefield, looks like I'll have to stick to the ones in EU Countries, Latvia, Poland etc etc.

Hey, as I understand it right, anyone here can send u an invitation in paper (approved by local office of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) for u to get a private visa. I wrote CAN because anything can go wrong, but I am very optimistic now and hope everything will be ok.
Think u need to get more detailed information from our consulate by phone, for example, about private visa.
Also needed more detailed info about medical insurance. Hmm.. This operation needs very detailed planning, but think the game is worth the candle. :)

I think this "Red tape" answers your query about why not many people visit Russian battlefields, it's easier to go elsewhere.
For price of Visas for Mrs D & myself, I can get ferry to France.

Let's review the situation after Christmas, I'll see how my Bank Account is.

I get the feeling that Russia is waking up to tourism though, realising the huge earning potential of this kind of stuff. Kubinka for example is scary and kind of 'old school' on it's public statement but I read that they are much more approachable when contacted... I suppose as lot's of the stuff we might want to look at is military related it's going to take a little longer for things to soften in those areas.

The only reason that hardens visit to Kubinka is that it is situated on land of military unit. Damned conspiracy :D (there r aslo standing modern vehicles that is on duty in our army:cowboy_125:).
For example, it is simple to visit Central Museum of Great Patriotic War in Moscow, there r huge museum - u don't need any kind of applications like Kubinka.
Or my local town museum-diorama or museum at tank battle field. :)

BUT!! THAT DAMN VISA for 45 pounds!
