Speaking of awards and recognition, any of you lads know how I can get my hands on one of HM Armed Forces Veteran Pins? Several of the lads here at the Legion [ in Canada ] received them when they were first issued. They were in Canadian Forces serving along side HM Forces. This I understand was the original terms of reference. My Father-in-law applied and was rejected because he was a Canadian and not in HM forces, albeit he was an officer in the RCAF seconded to the RAF 357 Sqn. I went through a go around with the head boy in charge of pins and wanted to choke him with his rules. Anyway, I would sincerely like to get him one of these before he answers the great roll call.
    Thanks.
I've attached the pin, the man and his Christmas gift I made.

    Militarycross,
Got mind mine just before Remembrance Sunday.
But the answer to your query, I'm sorry to say is no, please see attached extract from application proforma, under Eligibility, I can't see the reason for this, but the powers that be,??? can say no more on how I feel about it.

Just moved this discussion to its own thread, as it isn't really connected with the WW2 King's Badge.

Sorry for the digression from the main subject.

No problem - but moving discussions to their own thread like this gets them wider circulation. I am sure there are many here who are interested to know of the Veteran's Badge.

The curious thing in my mind is that the qualification for this badge was, to my understanding from our Legion President, for those who "Served alongside HM forces" and that was changed very quickly on to "served in" or words to that effect. Thus, some of the lads at the Branch who applied right out of the gate got the badge and others did not. My contention is that Dad was not "alongside" but "in" for all intents and purposes. Only Canada wrote his pay chit but everything else was RAF.

    We are not amused!

I understand that many veterans are now in the process of sending back their veterans badges as a protest against the refusal by the MoD and HD Committee to issue a National Defence Medal to those who have served since 1945.

Many veterans who have served since 1945 have done so in areas where no medal was awarded and so, when they go on parade they have nothing to show for their many years of selfless service. The veterans badge is not authorised to be worn on parade and many veterans are now purchasing "bling" medals and wearing them on parade in defiance of the refusal to issue a National Defence Medal.

There is a campaign to have a National Defence Medal issued to all HM Armed Forces who have served since 1945 - see Campaign News - Home.

Sheila what areas/campaigns are still oustanding regarding a medal or a bar. I thought the only one was Seuz and that was resolved a few years back.

I have a Veterans Badge but I won't be sending mine back :)

Looking at the proposed criteria for this medal, service personnel who did a few days service, had a training accident and were discharged would qualify. Won't that cheapen the whole concept of service medals?

I read the link but the page just seems to say about signing a petition and sending your badge back.....I don't get what they are asking for regarding why they want it.

To be fair if it looks like they picture they have, it looks like a running medal you get at the end of a Marathon or something and I can't say I'd be fussed about it hanging around my neck.

I tend to agree with you Paul.

    I just cannot be bothered.

BOAR for a start. My husband's uncle served in Germany for 4 years and the only medal he has is a bling one!

Oh, and the likes of my son who served for 9 years but wasn't entitled to a medal because he never left England!

I too have a veterans badge and I'm not intending sending it back either! :)

I have to agree that the website is very badly designed and I am trying to persuade the organisers to do something about it. The petition that they link to is also very badly worded.

I understand what they are trying to do but they are going about it the wrong way - again this is something I am trying to persuade them to address.

    Sheila,

Can I ask what they are wanting a medal for exactly? Without sounding respectful but is it for 'turning up?' or are there some operational tours that took place that are not recognised by way of a medal?

Apologises I missed post 18. Replied below.
