CCTV of the area has been passed to the police in the hope of catching those responsible.

Clean-up work has already begun but is likely to cost thousands of pounds and will divert cash away from the charity's work of supporting serving and retired RAF personnel.

"Like the remarkable men who the memorial commemorates, we will not rest until we have finished the job," said Mr Murray.

No excusable but the actions of young, brainless hooligans will always be with us. That this appears to be politically/ideologically motivated is even more disturbing.

That's appalling to see. I was only explaining the significance of this memorial to my youngest daughter the other week after she had passed by it on her travels.

  9. Naturally such stupid acts have no excuse. It might be interesting though to try and understand why precisely this monument was chosen. Or was it just a random vandalism act, which could as well have been directed at any other monument?
If we want the next generations to remember and respect WW2 veterans, it might be useful to understand those who show disrespect.
Beside pure stupidity, I could find a number of reasons why some specific individuals would want to disfigure such a monument, which in no way would excuse them, but at least might perhaps lead to possible cures. For example, if the defacing was perpetrated as a protest against Bomber Command's strategy during WW2, an explanation of the contemporary reasoning behind this strategy might help visitors understand why it took the form it did.
However, I doubt this act of vandalism came from such a possible, if faulty, protest, otherwise a more appropriate target would probably have been Bomber Harris' statue outside St. Clement Danes rather than this one.

  11. Thanks for the links CL. I do find the Bomber Command monument quite moving.
Given its targets, this vandalism probably comes from some neo-nazi bully boys then :screwy:

One memorial had 'EDL' and anti-immigrant graffiti spayed on it a few years back.

Met Police on twitter stated other memorials have also been vandalised including WPC Yvonne Fletcher memorial in St James Square
These incidents are being treated as linked. DI Dave Watkinson “These crimes have understandably caused a lot of public outrage and we're working hard to find those responsible.

On the evening of Sunday, 20 January, police received a report of criminal damage to the Bomber Command memorial in Green Park near Piccadilly.

On Monday, 21 January, police also received subsequent reports of damage to the 'Allies Statue' of Winston Churchill and Franklin D Roosevelt in New Bond Street, the Canada Memorial in Green Park, The Royal Marine Memorial in The Mall and the Yvonne Fletcher memorial in St James's Square.

Writing as someone who lost a brother who fought in Bomber Command all I can say is that the offenders are simply beyond redemption
