Trying to find the ship my Dad named Duncan Alexander Lightowler served on in the D Day landings in the Royal Navy

Fred, the obvious question is has the family applied for his service record?

 

I presume not.

 

Then I suggest they should try here:

The full record will give a ship name or shore base that held his pay record for the D-Day period.
