Troop Roll Books. They were normally kept by the Troop Sergeant. Anyone seen any of these? This is the cover and guidance notes for a RAC Troop Roll Book, this being the one for 3rd Troop A Squadron 24th Lancers.
No, but presumably you have one? 24th Lancers They look interesting, what units in the RAC had them, ? Recce?
I have a scan of the 24L 3rd Troop A Squadron Troop Roll Book as described in your link - as per link, it was completed by the Troop Sergeant Harry Dews. The images in my first post are a few of the scanned pages. Sadly the Roll Book got disposed when Harry went into a Care Home - wish I had known at the time for obvious reasons. I can only presume they were standard issue - a sort of note book to keep track of various bits and pieces - but haven't seen one relating to any other Regiment. Hence my question.
Re. The company: Gale & Polden - Wikipedia "Gale and Polden was a British printer and publisher. Founded in Brompton, near Chatham, Kent in 1868, the business subsequently moved to Aldershot, where they were based until closure in November 1981 after the company had been bought by media mogul Robert Maxwell." Googling them with "roll book" brings up what I think are mostly earlier examples, i.e. "Cavalry" roll books and ones from World War One. I think that the IWM and the National Army museum have examples: IWM "Roll book" - Google Search Albeit theirs are in their archives, which can be quite hard to "search" and among items I think that they describe in groups such as "private papers".
Desperately looking for some of these for 12th Lancers at the outbreak of war Trying to pin down my grandad's movements with them before and during his time with Phantom
Good question but unlikely to be answered via a Roll Book. While the one I've got access to includes all sorts of information about the Troopers themselves, there is no information about where they were located or when. Good Luck with your quest - I know the feeling!
Thanks SDP, does yours have details of the vehicle that they were assigned to or which troop? I know where he his squadron patrols would have been assigned, just not certain sure which troop he was in.
'My' Troop Roll Book mentions the Troop number specifically: see post #1. There are various sections in the Book and one section includes the tanks in the Troop and the T Numbers and the names of each crew member (so I know the names of all the chaps in each crew and, most important to me, the chaps names in the same crew as dad). If it's helpful - please let me know - I'll try to upload a few key pages but I need to resize the images to cope with forum limits.
