Hi and welcome to the forum good luck with your research. Have you thought of applying for his records from the MOD they cost £30 but well worth it the info you can obtain is fantastic. David
Barres Welcome aboard ! Getting your father's records is a must. Once you have them it opens up a complete index of his life in the army and you will get help from other forum members to put flesh on the bones. Click on my icon and open up my Gallery. There you will find my own records which will demonstrate the type of info you will receive. My own DOB is Aug 1923 and I was also in North Africa in Apr 1943 so you should be able to make comparisons. Good luck with your research Ron
It may be worth mentioning, if you're researching prior to records arriving that R.E.M.E. (Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) is not one and the same as R.E. (Royal Engineers). REME was formed in 1942 to take over large parts of the maintenance and recovery duties of RAOC and RASC. RE were devoted to 'Military Engineering' - often building things or blowing them up plus mine and bomb disposal. You'll need to find out your father's unit from his records before you can have any real idea of what he did. He could have been in a workshop repairing radios or just as easily recovering knocked out armour under fire.
