Sorry about last post - not so hot on computer! This time it's readable - hopefully.

558330 is from the Hussars batch of Regimental Numbers.

If Snelson had been a Capt, he would surely have been issued with an Offr Number.

    Regards

Sgt J Tonks was enlisted as a Lancer. His Regt No is from the batch allocated to Lancers.

I have a training certificate of his from 1938 wich states he was in the hussars so as far as I know he was never a lancer.

Have heard back from CWGC regarding W A Snelson. They confirm his rank as Corporal and are amending their records.

My Grandma was told that my Grandad, Trooper R G [2 RTR HQ Sqn - tank driver] died of wounds after shelling whilst tank crew resting & having a cup of tea outside tank. It appears that they had been observed from a German OP in hills above in Tavoleto [from Church tower]. Tank crews were shelled when out of tanks - quite possibly whilst your Grandad (a Tank commander?] was at meeting nearby?
[Letter from Padre reported Trooper R G Parker died of shock in Advanced Dressing Station from being close to shell explosion nearby]

Both were buried nearby until reburied at Gradara War Cemetery which I have visited twice with my Mother and my own sons. A beautifully peaceful location.
