    Hi,

Might be a good idea (and normal forum etiquette) if you acknowledge the help you received on yesterday’s query before you start another one…..

Sorry I forgot to add, we think he may be involved with the liberation of Belsen, would the info on the card show this?
    Thankyou

Not a lot of WW2 information, he enlisted in 1942 and no other information until 1946, the link for abbreviations in your other post will help you decipher what there is. For any serviceman the only way to uncover their WW2 history is to send off for their official service records.

I do have his service records, shall I open a new thread and post them?

Yes, always best to post service records so that members can see everything in context, tracer cards only give a very brief summary. When looking for an individual always best to put number and name in title (you can amend it as the originator)

    Jenny,

    You posted:
There are a number of threads on that incident and the rescue mission. Different units were involved, so the identification of his unit is needed.

Edward Murphy born ?? and Service Number 14362941 .It is important to have these in the text, not on an image or attachment; we often have members join having found the forum.

Hi Jenny, always best to have 1 thread for a person, not numerous.
Then people can read all that has been researched on that person so far and not duplicate things (It can get annoying when someone has spent a lot of time doing research only to find it has already been done in another thread).
    regards

    Good Evening,
Please can I have any info on these units, my great uncle was serving in these units in 1945 to 1947 as a gunner, some of his file is redacted, I wonder if anyone would know why that would be?
    Thankyou

    Jenny,

It would help those willing to help if you posted the Service Record you have; which you stated in November 2024 you had. It then may then be possible to identify his unit(s). His Tracer Card (Post 1) has nothing between 1942-1946, (merging request deleted see next Post

I fear you have exhausted the patience of those who have posted before.

The other thread is about Jenny's Grandad, this is about her GreatUncle.

My understanding of the RA tracer cards is that often once a card was full the name etc at the top of the card was transferred to a new card & it is only the new card that survives.

Not a very nice thing to say to someone asking for help, particularly when new members at the very least aren't au fait with forum workings. (As has been said multiple times before - it'll always be up to regular members whether they reply or not, based on their own experiences. As has also been said before - new members may ask the same questions that others have asked previously but their questions keep this place ticking over and add to the general material available and we don't want future ones to feel discouraged, even if, for whatever reason some in the past didn't post any acknowledgement/thanks. So, any info provided will be useful for those who follow on. )

Likewise it's not up to you to continually tell people you'll be getting mods to merge threads. Mods certainly don't mind regulars contacting us regarding some useful forum tidying, but there is a balance that you're tipping over. It's become quite clear that too many of your requests for / declarations to OPs re merges are erroneous / not applicable. Also simply telling people to start new threads elsewhere will potentially create extra (merging/closing/linking) work. If you'd referred matters to mods first, you wouldn't have to later edit out references to such from your posts; wouldn't also thus leave the responses of others looking irrelevant.

It'd be less frustrating for better-versed members if you stopped posting on subjects about which you know nothing. You don't seem to learn from repeated errors. You post results of cursory searches, when people have already searched the net to find this forum in the first place. People often to ask very specific questions, even supplying info which you then either ignore or don't reference in your 'standard' replies. Routinely PMing advice isn't the best practice either, even if it's basic stuff: you could be sending them on a wild goose chase, with no opportunity for corrections by those who have better knowledge.

(You've disregarded/dismissed anything I've said in PMs, so open forum it is, again.)

Hi Jenny, post Edward's records here if you can, as you have discovered the tracer card has the briefest summary and his full records will allow members to chip in and help you interpret them after seeing the whole scenario. Generally medical details are redacted and also anything that could relate to living people. Don't get disheartened, it often involves little steps that will lead to the full picture of their service.
