I too have a query relating to the Casualty Lists, specifically the handwritten 3 digit codes which appear alongside virtually every wounded/KIA entry?

I am trying to trace a specific casualty from 2RUR/Royal Signals on 29 November 1944 and I know they were injured from a mortar blast (probably to the back of the lower right leg) so was wondering (hoping) that the 3 digit code was in some way related to the type and/or severity of the injury/wound?

Codes I am referring to are shown in Blue below and on attached Casualty List records (same codes appear for numerous casualties across varying units and dates so there must be some common link?).

    Any suggestions welcome.....

    1 Rifleman George Frederick Anderson - 14691427 (773) - 2 RUR - KIA 29/11/1944
    2. Rifleman H Ravenscroft - 14746461 (770) - 2 RUR - Wounded 29/11/1944
    3. Acting Lance Corporal Norman Swanwick - 2343577 (768) - Royal Signals - 8 Corps Signals - Died of Wounds 29/11/1944
    4. Signalman H Burton - 14512763 (769) - Royal Corps of Signals - 72 Construction Section - Wounded 29/11/1944
    5. Acting lance Sergeant J.L. Ince - 3526861 (771) - Royal Corps of Signals - 72 Construction Section - KIA 29/11/1944

Does anyone know what the distinction is between the category of Wounded and Dangerously ill is? Presumably the latter would include all mentally ill categories but would it also include seriously wounded? Also, do the WO417 records include injuries (e.g. broken leg) which would not be categorised as serious?

I assumed Dangerously Ill was related to a life threatening sickness rather than a physical wound, I'm not sure mental illness would be included in the casualty lists - with something like a broken leg if it was in training or similar I don't think it would be included but if in action I think it may be considered as a wound - with wounds I don't think they categorise the seriousness of the wound, except where very minor where there is sometimes a note of "remained at duty". These are just my opinions from the lists I've looked at, hopefully someone can give some definitive answers

Dangerously ill - always thought this category covers infection, poor recovery from severe wounds, as well as any other acute medical conditions not related to battle.

Conveys the gravity of patient's situation; put the NOK on notice.

There were also at least 2 levels to illness - seriously ill, dangerously ill.
