Apologies if this is in the wrong place Ok short back story to this. My Grandad sadly passed away in 2004 but he left me with his Second World War memorabilia. I don't know much about the items I received but I did some research on the medals. I have created a gallery too showcase most of the items that were left to me. I would appreciate it if you could comment on the pictures here or over at deviantART, and maybe even provide me with some information on some of the items. parry's deviantART gallery Thanks in advance
Hi Parry and welcome to the forum Thats quite a collection you have there ! I would say ref the bullets: Top one .303 and bottom one is a 9mm. Incase you aren't aware the .303 would be used in either the Bren gun, a light machine gun or the standard British issue bolt action rifle, the Lee Enfield. Regards Andy ps I'm no expert
Ref the Parachute and assuming its silk (Again I'm no expert) I think only the US Airborne had cam parachutes, although I thought the cam pattern was bigger than that unless its a Axis (Enemy) chute. I the 'rope' is definately 'Para cord'. I'm guessing you happy with the Campaign medals as you have the card they came with Ref the German War Merit Cross: War Merit Cross I love the Gresham Court Menu and Programme.....Some real history there. Thanks again for sharing Andy
Thanks for the reply and thanks for the info on the bullets, I'll update the description I had a feeling it was silk like you said because it seems very light. I hope to get some pictures up also but currently these are stored in my very messy attic but I'll get around to finding them on the weekend.

I'd wait for an expert to confirm the Cal. of the bullets. I'd guess the middle one was German Have you got your Grandfathers Service records too?

Unfortunately not, unless they are with the pictures in the attic. I also have a 'Cairo: How To See It' guide which is a double sided information sheet on events and places in Cairo. There is also a map on this publication. I didn't scan that in as I wasn't sure if people would be interested?
Parry, Someone will be interested...There's a fair few members who have an interest in the African Campaign and a few who were actually there. As for his service records the next of kin can apply for them Cheers Andy
Parry, There is mention of North Africa, but no North Africa Star campaign medal in the collection. Any ideas? Regards Tom

Hi Parry, I thought I'd post this - permit from my father's papers - to compare with your Grandfather's which has some wear and tear. Regards, D

Regards Tom Where is the mention of the North Africa Star, I've probably missed something :p Parry, Someone will be interested...There's a fair few members who have an interest in the African Campaign and a few who were actually there. Not that I can see, although there could very well be more items along with the photographs. Also I just uploaded a large version of just the map from the Cairo leaflet Cairo Map by ~parry on deviantART Also I've just come across a soldiers service & pay book, brown in colour. I'll scan some pages from that tomorrow if anybody is interested.
Parry Just had another look at your photos and a cold shiver went down my spine. Your Grandad was called up on October 1st 1942. I was called up on October 1st 1942 Snap ! Ron ps Let's have a look at any document (First page of his AB64 would do) that gives his Army Number
Its not a rifle bullet is it, its round nose? A few guys on here are well up in the field its looks like a .30 cal carbine round maybe, too long??? It came from Africa? Is it Italian? Kev
Kev, I did wonder if it was a German 7.92mm/.30cal. round but can't find an exact match on google. Both are pointed heads arnt they? Looks like a pistol bullet in a rifle cartridge.
There are some rounded like that but the bullet(not the cartridge) is longer. Maybe Spotter can help with it
