Private Thomas Ernest Abbott (born 1 Nov 1906) was commissioned in the Royal Indian Army Service Corps as 2nd Lieutenant on 28 Jan 1942. It is known that he was still in the army in 1946 but after that there is no record of him. Does anyone have any ideas about tracing his army history after that date even if only his discharge.
Not adding anything new, but I was hoping what was known would lead somewhere elseā¦ Pity there is no service number attached with his commissioning - it would make it easier to track his movements from then on. THE LONDON GAZETTE, 15 MAY, 1942 India Office, 15th May, 1942 The KING has approved the following promotions, appointments, retirements, etc.: INDIAN ARMY Emergency Commissions. The undermentioned appts. are made: To be 2nd Lts. 28th Jan. 1942 Pte. Thomas Ernest Abbott

Hi, Your post interested me as my Great Grandfather was also in the RIASC and took an emergency commission in 1942. After the second world war he returned home to what is now, Pakistan. As I understand it, those that wanted to remain in the Indian continent found a role in the new armies of India and Pakistan. Now, the British Library holds some records of those who served in the post Pakistan and Indian armies. I.e. those relating to British nationals. I found my ancestors British army service records which cover up until 1942. I then ordered his service records from the British library and was told that there was only a confidential report from Pakistan in 1957. I've got a hole in his service records from 1942-1947. His time as an officer. I've been told to contact the British Library and tell them that he was promoted from the ranks. I would be interested to hear how you get on with tracing your relative. Good luck, Rich
There was another thread on this Forum where the poster said he was able to obtain a copy of records from the National Archives in Delhi http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/18823-british-indian-army-records-where-are-they/?p=360157 Cheers Maureen
The subject of my enquiry, Thomas Ernest Abbott, was commissioned in the Royal Indian Army Service Corps on on 28 Jan 1942. It is known that he was still in the army in 1946 but after that there is no record of him. His daughter is currently visiting Delhi where she is trying to find his service record an the Adjutant General's office. Her problem is that that they require his service number which we do not have as it is not given in the London Gazette. Another possible line of enquiry has arisen. Might he have transferred to the British Army at the time of Indian independance. There is nothing in the Gazette to show this and I doubt that it happened given the surplus of army personnel at the end of the war. However, I would like to look at the possibility. Can anyone tell me if any RIASC officers did transfer to the British Army at that time and if they did where I should make enquiries.
I have found this on http://www.unithistories.com/officers/IndianArmy_officers_A01.html : there does seem a lack of any detailed info on a lot of the promoted officers in this section of this site Abbott, Thomas Ernest Married ...; one son, two daughters. 01.11.1906 - Pte. ? 2nd Lt. 28.01.1942 WS/Lt. 01.10.1942 (reld > 04.1947) 28.01.1942 commissioned, Indian Army [emergency commission] served Indian Army Service Corps
drailton, Do you know where he was born, I am searching Ancestry for records, but in order to limit the search it would be good to know a few more details if you have and unless you have already done that search Thanks TD re your last post OK - they don't say who has posted the info
