The Stab-in-the-Back Myth (*Dolchstoßlegende in German) was a false conspiracy theory, spread by right-wing nationalists, that the German Army didn't lose World War I on the battlefield but was betrayed by civilians—specifically socialists, communists, and Jews—who supposedly undermined the war effort and forced the government to sign the humiliating Treaty of Versailles. This myth, promoted by military leaders like Hindenburg and used heavily by the Nazi Party, blamed these groups for Germany's defeat, fueling antisemitism and political instability in the Weimar Republic.

    Key Aspects of the Myth:

Falsehood: The German Army was, in fact, exhausted and facing collapse by late 1918, as confirmed by generals themselves, but the military command hid this from the public.

Blame Shifting: Military leaders, including Ludendorff, shifted blame for the defeat onto the new democratic politicians who formed the Weimar government and signed the armistice.

Targets: The myth specifically targeted socialists ("November Criminals"), communists, and Jewish people, portraying them as disloyal traitors.

Political Exploitation: Right-wing groups, especially the Nazis, used this myth to attack the legitimacy of the Weimar Republic, promising to restore German pride and strength.

Consequences: It fueled intense antisemitism, leading to political violence (like the murder of Matthias Erzberger), and helped create the environment where Hitler and the Nazis gained power, ultimately leading to the Holocaust.

In essence, the Stab-in-the-Back Myth was a powerful propaganda tool that deflected responsibility from the military's failures and directed public anger towards marginalized groups, undermining German democracy and paving the way for extremism.
