Crossing the Garigliano using the collapsible, canvas on wooden frame assault boats.

The 2 Inniskillings Memorial with the Minturno ridge behind. This memorial was originally close to the lateral road, the jumping off point for Phase 3 of the assault on the Gustav Line, securing the Minturno ridge. It was removed when the road was updated, it now resides in the Inniskillings museum.

The Skins assembly area by the river and the crossing point. The Skins lost all their boats to arty and mortar fire during the crossing and resorted to crossing in the 2 Wilts area. These pics were taken in 2000, the road has since been straightened and widened, cutting through the former assembly area, and thick undergrowth and trees prevents access to the river.

Looking across to Mount Damiano, which, like Cassino, dominated the approaches from Garigliano and access to the Ausente valley.

Salvatito, the area in which the Skins HQ was located whilst on the Damiano. The final two views are to the crest of Damiano (point 411), from the Skins fdl's. It was for his actions on these slopes, that Pte George Mitchell (The London Scottish), was awarded a posthumous VC during, 56 Divisions gallant assault to gain the mount.
