I just thought of opening a topic on the Gay Holocaust. This would seem an interesting subject. I was surprise to find out that before the Nazis came to power Berlin was actually a very liberal city, with a large gay community. Scary how the world can regress.

It's my understanding that Hitler went after gays, gypsies, mentally deficient and mentally ill before going after the Jews.

What would happen to a gay Nazi then? Remain in the closet forever? :peepwalla:

I don't know but this just provoked some questions!

Were any Jews sufficiently powerful that they were able to ride out the war in Germany without personally being persecuted? Was there any such thing as a Jewish Nazi? Were any Jews in the German armed forces?

These same questions pertain to gays presuming, of course, that they were out of the closet?

Yes, from what I have seen, closeted gay Germans were at times blackmailed by fellow soldiers, civilians, superiors, etc.

    Another related question:

During and before World War II, did European Blacks exist, especially in Germany and, if so, what was their status?

I really wasn't sure what to make of the title of this one. It summoned up quite an image!

Actually; I read a bit about Gays under the Nazis ..... Oh dear god! This is going to be a mine field!

Starts again ... I can't think where. Probably in " Ordinary Men " or " Soldiers of Destruction " ? As I remember it, it was a bit of a case of who ye were, as much as what ye were. And just exercising a bit of discretion.

I seem to recall I got the impression that they weren't That *Cough* 'down on' Gays. Not like they were Gypsys or even Jehovah's Witnesses. 'Best of all' ~ I think I have this the right way round? ~ they were actually more forgiving of native, German Gays? I guess they sort of took the view that at least the guy was a good German, first and foremost? Others would be looked on as depraved foreigners, messing up the Master Race.

Obviously, I cannot be quoted on any of this. And I stand to be torn to shreds over possible wild inaccuracies in my memory of what I'd read. But, I'm still pretty sure I must have read it in one of the above two books. Maybe the latter?

Certainly a 'different' bit of WW2 subject matter, anyway.

Well! I think what I really am interested to know is what effect did the holacaust have on blacks and I may have phrased my questioned strangely? I haven't read or heard too much about this but I tend to think that Hitler was not favorably disposed towards them.

I hear about the Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, mentally ill and mentally deficient but it doesn't seem that blacks are often talked about with regard to Nazi Germany. Or has it just slipped by me?

The link I provided should answer your question, roughly half a million African Germans lived in Germany when the Nazi Party took power. Roughly 30-50 thousand were killed in the camps.

The British were one of the main instigators in the trade of African slaves and there was a significant amount in Britain long before WW2.

There was a thread started recently about Britians first black army officer who was killed in WW1 called Walter Tull.

He was a rather good football player before he was killed in France.

I think it was the phrase

    did European Blacks exist

    I found quite surprising.

It's like me, as a Brit, asking if there are any Blacks in Harlem, surely?

Wasn't Ernst Röhm killed because he was gay? Or was it just a cover because he threatened Hitlers political position?

I imagine this is because Hitler hated the Jews more and he wasn't yet finished with them!

Everyone, except a pure Aryan German in good shape mentally and physically had to fear ending up in a death camp.

Well that's part of it, had this continued early on in the war before mass indoctrination could have happened, I'm sure their would have been more backlash to the policies of the party from the German population.

As to the "colored" persons of Germany, there were a great number of them. Most were what is known as mulatto, since they were the offspring of German females and French colonial troops who were stationed in the Rhineland during the occupation time.

They were called the "Rhineland Bastards" by the Nazis, as well as then Bishop Paccelli who was the Bishop overseeing Germany and the French occupation areas. He (Paccelli) was certain that these children were the children of raped German women, even though the facts spoke against it. Paccelli would later become Pope Pius XII, and request that General Mark Clark NOT station any colored troops on guard duty in Rome, nor in the locale of the Vatican. He was quite a racist in respect to men of color, especially when they were in uniform, and far from home.

Some were spared the sterlization if they had certain "skills", one was boxing, another was on the stage (singing and dancing), and the last one I recall being a "saving skill" was in the circus as jugglers, tight-rope walkers, and other high air performers.

When Hitler came to power he had the great bulk of them sterilized without consent by they or their families, castration for the boys, and tubal ligation for the girls. They numbered in the tens of thousands I believe, although on a few hundred were actually forcibaly sterilized.

Gays/homosexuals were a great concern of Hitler, even though his Nazi party itself seemed filled with them (Rhome and his top staff), and the Jewish officer who had awarded him his Iron Crosses (first and second class) during the First World War had a a charge of pedastry lodged against him.

Open homosexuals who were apprehended (outside the party) were forced to wear the pink triangle on their clothing before and after they were sent to the KZs.

Could you provide links to this 'Rhineland Bastards' claim?
