    Hey everyone.
Trying to find out about my nans brother GNR Lewis Crumpton.
I do have a lot of information already but trying to dig deeper. He was captured I believed to be at cassel but now could of possibly been in Watou with them being ambushed and Major Cartland being killed. Everytime I find a bit of information out I then cant find any hard evidence of him being named etc and it puts doubt in my mind.
    Can anyone help???

    Hi Kyle,

Yes thats him. I believe i do have that information already but thank you for taking the time to supply it.
What i'm trying to find out is his journey before he was captured. Was he captured in Cassel or was he captured in Watou? I have found some information that his regiment was under the leadership of Major Cartland but he was killed in Watou from an ambush but no mention after of my nans brother in any reports so unsure.

[IMG] Very little in official records regarding rank and file I`m afraid . How did he die ? The PoW photo from his card appears to show him in good health (from appearances) Good luck with your search there`s numerous threads on here regarding Cartland and Cassel.

    Hallo John,

I would strongly advise you to contact John West, who already has conducted quite a lot of research regarding what happened in Cassel and Watou.
In fact, a couple of months ago, accompanied by a local guide, we both surveyed the location where Maj Cartland was presumably ambushed.
In the mean time though, I would suggest you to take a look at the information provided on John's website:
The Battle at Cassel May 1940
    The Breakout from Cassel

    Hi John!

It's always good to hear from relatives of the heroic 145 Brigade ('Somerforce') who held Cassel against impossible odds and thereby ensured Operation Dynamo was a success. It's no exageration to say that without holding Cassel during 25-30th May 1940 the escape roads to Dunkirk would have been sealed off by panzers moving across the Flanders plain and -who knows- world history might have been very different.

The Battle at Cassel May 1940 – 140th (5th London) Army Field Regiment, Royal Artillery

145 Brigade's Commander, Brigadier Nigel Somerset wrote a letter to the Daily Telegraph on the 19th February 1948:

Sir – I notice that in his memoirs of 1940 Mr. Churchill observes that “After the loss of Boulogne and Calais only the remains of the port of Dunkirk and the open beaches next to the Belgian frontier were in our hands.”

At the time I was commanding a brigade group holding a sector from Cassel to Hazebrouck. We were heavily attacked by German armour on May 27. At Cassel the Germans were repulsed with the loss of over 20 tanks. At Hazebrouk our force there was surrounded and did not finally capitulate until the evening of May 28.

Not knowing that the B.E.F. was embarking for the United Kingdom we hourly expected a vigorous counter-attack by British and possibly French troops to restore the situation. We hung on at Cassel until the night of May 29, and then tried to reach the Dunkirk bridgehead.

German operation maps at the time showed Cassel and district still occupied by the enemy, and leaflets were dropped calling on us to surrender, as “your generals are gone”!

I feel it is fair neither to myself nor the troops under my command to let this stand pass from mind, especially as so many gave their lives, and most of the remainder of us spent five years in captivity. Incidentally, by holding on at Cassel we not only deprived the Germans of one of the main roads to Dunkirk, but enabled many British detached units and individuals to reach the bridgehead.

All these facts appear to have utterly escaped the notice of the authorities at the time owing to the indescribable confusion, and I feel that an opportunity has now been afforded me of bringing them to light.

    Yours faithfully, N. F. SOMERSET

There's a lot of information about Major Ronald Cartland MP and the probable War Crime ambush near Watou on my website (as Christian says). Hope to see you soon for another visit Christian!
Major Ronald Cartland MP – 140th (5th London) Army Field Regiment, Royal Artillery

I've also posted about Watou and Cartland's life story on this forum (look at my Profile postings for the links).

Finally, I should also acknowledge the pioneering research done by Paul Hunt in the 1990's about Cassel, his father-in-law Bdr Harry Munn and the 51st Worcester Yeomanry anti-tank regiment in particular. Paul has a spreadsheet of the Regiment's POWs and I could put him in contact with you if you wish. His website is here: Dunkirk - the untold story

    Hello John.

If you do not already know, Lewis' service record is held at The National Archives in Kew. It should hold many answers to your questions.

It is currently a "closed" record, but given Lewis' wartime death it should be possible to get it made "open" and available. There is a process to be gone through which takes time, but the sooner you started (if you wish to of course) the better.

Here's the link to TNA record, with a screenshot of it's catalogue listing below that.

Good luck with your searching, however you decide to proceed.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

    Hello John.

This would have been the prisoner of war camp area designated as the hospital. It was Fort XIV (14) of the Thorn Fortress complex, Graudenz (courtesy of: Festung Thorn - Fort XIV - Toruń - TracesOfWar.com )

Lewis' was originally buried there, then subsequently a post-war re-burial in 1948 in Malbork CWG Cemetery.

Kind regards, always remember, never forget,

    Jim.

I found the short-form of Lewis Crumpton's capture record as given by 'Mr Jinks' (one of 800+ for the Cassel area having no less than 112 different spellings of four place names!) at the end of May 1940 but of those only 14 (possibly 15) mentioned 53rd A/T Regiment or one of the three batteries that I think were in the Cassel area. My own father-in-law Harry Munn is not among them (his personal record is also closed), and according to my understanding there should have been around 48 men in the three Batteries.

The more detailed record under the photograph does contain the regiment etc. information for Lewis, I'd be very interested to know where/how that record was obtained, if you would be so kind, as that may find more members of 53rd.

Thank you, and especially thanks to John West for his very kind acknowledgement of my humble offering into one man's experiences.

    Paul Hunt.

    Hey everyone!
I'm so sorry I haven't responded. I didn't have any notifications and didn't know that there was any replies to my thread.
I do have some of the information already but some not so thank you to everyone who has taken the time to attach something.
