Is it time to renew again ? That said, supporting forums in a world becoming dominated by arse-about-facebook is almost a political statement and we aren't allowed to make those anymore :)

Many thanks for the info which tells me (and others) when an update is due..
May I also presume that on the due date the system will then provide a link that will allow me/us to do this easily?

    Best regards

Whilst looking on how to renew my patronage I read this thread with interest. A few members expressed concern regarding the future of the website, seemingly unaware of the Wayback Machine.

Without boring you all let me tell you a little a bout this gigantic project and how to access it. The Wayback Machine is an archive of the entire Internet stored for the long term, centuries rather than decades, and to safeguard against natural disasters, stored on three continents. By 2017 it had stored 335 billion webpages and was growing at the rate of 20 terabytes each week. For more detail consult the Wayback article in Wikipedia.

The project was made available to the public in 2001 and I submitted a number of URLs to it from 2004. Now the benign crawlers have been vastly improved and there is no need to submit websites, although this can still be done. Once a website is archived the bots return continuously giving a full history of the website, a colossal (you can't avoid superlatives) undertaking. Little known by the general public, the archive is already consulted by journalists, historians, and specialists.

Now for World War II Talk. The Wayback machine has made 617,457 WWII Talk web page captures from 2004 to 2017 and, at a guess, well over 700,000 by now. For help in accessing the archive go to How to Use the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine

The search facility is very good, no need for an exact URL, just type in Ron Goldstein to see all Ron's websites stored safely away for future generations.

The archived WWII Talk data is here: Wayback Machine

P.S. If you look at the links below to my websites you will see that they are in fact links to the Wayback Machine.

Thanks Peter G. I came across it just last week researching the Avro York aircraft. Something there for all of us listed for the future to remember the past.

    Things that donations go to.

Next generation of this software being worked on.
Been getting the basic colours etc. right. Think it's looking OK, now. No timescale other than next couple of months.

Same system, but some nice new bits.
The garbled interaction between text entry on GBoard mobile fixed.
Multiple reaction 'likes'. Anything we want as a 'like' type response really - 'Boring, but brilliant' maybe? 'You poltroon!' ? 'Mmmm, books', etc. etc. ''(& negative feedback returns)
    More interestingly, Tables!

Along with a few other twiddly bits.
Even Owen seems to like it, which bodes well.
Nothing seen yet on a clean test installation that ought to raise alarms. Can't claim to have seen it all yet, but quite impressed so far. Evolution over revolution. (Previous changes have been complete software shifts. This is an upgrade to the same software, so ought to be much smoother.)

Otto's also investing in an expensive new server for 2F, Hyperwar & rescued websites to live on. (We're already on a shiny server.)
We play at his expense, chaps.
He doesn't like asking any more than I do, but it really does all go back into the system.

I might have mentioned this before but would be good to have a donate button which members can weigh in when they are feeling a bit flush so along with the Patron donation we could add more funds to ensure things keep ticking along

I've nudged Otto to come up with current donate details, mate.
Doubt we'll be doing more to this installation as it may require rebuilding post-move, but certainly on the list for the next.

This quote is from Adam's recent post on another thread:

Saying yet again - nobody that helps run this free site is paid, or obliged to do so.
Hours & hours are put into steering a rickety oil tanker of a place that has nearly disintegrated several times over the decades.

There are three people with a true awareness of the emails, reports & general 'administrative' chatter that goes on. (And of course there is Otto, paying the bills. The monthly, hefty, bills).

After spending quite a lot of time during lockdown on the forum (as I guess a lot of us did), I realised in May that I didn't renew my 'membership' or Patron donation to the running of the forum in August 2019. Sorted straight away :).

After reading Adam's post above on another thread the other day it crossed my mind that we as members generally take it for granted that the forum is here for us, the mods are always here to help us (even if Owen does get a bit stroppy at times, having said that, he's not as bad as he used to be years ago:D), and I for one was really grateful to be able to log in to the forum especially during those weeks in lockdown and see a lot of the members doing the same.

Many of the new members who joined the forum this year probably don't know there is an option to donate -it's on your profile page under Account Upgrades,(as mentioned above, the forum is free to use), but wouldn't it be lovely if any members could give Otto some funds to run the forum a little boost this year so we can help keep it going. It's coming up to Christmas after all.;)

It would also be nice if there was a link to donate any extra funds to Otto as Clive mentioned a couple of posts ago. Is this possible Adam?

I've been on this site almost 12 years on and off and never even realised there was a "Patron" button....

That said, I couldn't find the "Upgrade" option on from my Profile page, then I went back to double check and found it, now I can't find it again?

Would someone be able to provide a "Really Dumbed Down Idiot's Guide" for the cerebally challenged like me to just click and pay in the future.....

I can’t afford to do it every year, but this year, I have just that little extra, and so, a payment where it does good.
