Strange 'rifles'. PT item?

My sister recently shared this shot of a team including Grandad, Alexandria, 1931.

I can see medicine balls and boxing gloves, but also those strange gun-shaped things.
He was a boxer, and while I initially thought they might be some sort of archaic sporting target rifle, closer inspection seems to show no trigger, or genuinely gun-like fittings. Weird 'muzzle' too.

Military PT gear? Weighted rifle-shaped things? Touch-fired local guns?

I'm guessing someone here might have a clue.

They're for bayonet practice - the ends are spring-loaded so you can 'stab'.

You sometimes see them doing the rounds at militaria fairs, prices vary quite a bit between £75-200.

    Colourful items.

I've seen them called "fencing muskets".
