Found our mystery Kiwi. Private Mons Haig Morgan, 44350. No idea which camp he was in but his address on his service record checks out.

At the time the file was compiled he was in 8A - also note a slight difference in service number

Thanks TD. I get the impression that a lot of men were processed through Gorlitz as my great granddad is listed as being held there in the POW database but I know from his diary he was in lots of other camps.

The service number is most likely a transcription error. When I found the nominal roll on ancestry I read it as 41350 also.

They other fella is still hiding from me. I've tried looking for Sturgeon Guy, Guy Sturgeon, Turgeon Guy and Guy Turgeon but no hits so far. I did find a G. Turgeon who graduated from university of Quebec in 1946 but nothing to link him to the military.

Excellent Diane! I had searched ancestry but had failed to turn up anything - their search engine can be a bit funny at times I think. I have some evidence that my great grandfather was in Stalag VIIIC at some point so this could be our man.

I hope it is the right chap. With hindsight the name could have been written as Turgeon J Guy.

I had a look, on line, at the telephone book for Lake Megantic and there are lots of people with the name Turgeon.

    Cheers

Seems to be a reasonably common name in Canada. I did think that there was possibly a middle initial and it would fit with what you found. There were a couple of South Africans listed in his log also - of any interest to you?

Cheers TD - all your efforts greatly appreciated. I'm going with J.G. Turgeon as the best fit for now. Thanks to the sterling efforts of yourself and others I think that's every name in the logbook transcribed. There are a few question marks over initials here and there but more than enough to be going on with. I'm going to update my list to reflect the new info I have and post the list. Next step after that is compiling additional info - rank, unit, camp etc.

    Rich,
Bulleyes were practise runs for aircrew, dummy runs of an operation - if that is the case what were they doing over the Loire when their plane came down?

horsa - do you have a copy of his Lib Q you can post for interest?? - thanks

Coming in late to this excellent thread.

Bullseyes were bombing range practices both on live and non live bombing ranges. Its surprising the number of inland bombing non live ranges that Bomber Command created. Not far from me on the Trent, there was the Lea Marshes bombing range then across the river,at Clayworth/Lound was another.Postwar we used Theddlethorpe,a prewar bombing range which use continued after the war. There was a number of incidents related to BC bombing training during the war on such ranges.Postwar there was an incident in the early 1950s when Mablethorpe was accidentally bombed by 25 pounder practice bombs, much to the embarrassment of Bomber Command No 1 Group.
