My grandad was in this regiment and im trying to find out more about his movements during the war, I have been intouch with the mod but they will not release anything until 2036. i am currently disbuting this. can anyone point me in the right direction for information all help will be much appreciated
Welcome to the forum. It will be B Squadron , 11th RTR not squad. 11 RTR was in 79th Armoured Division. Plenty of people on here with an interest in them.
Angela welcome to the forum What is the MOD withholding? You can apply for his service records Get a copy of military service records Apply for the records of someone who's deceased You can apply for a copy of someone else’s service records if any of the following are true: you were their immediate next of kin when they died, for example their spouse, parent or child you have a family or general research interest - you’ll only have access to limited information if they died less than 25 years ago, unless you’ve got consent from their immediate next of kin
the message came back FOI act section 41....could it be there withholding because he had a child out there during the war???
yes the email says unable to open this record, information exempt under section 41 of the FOI act 2000
If anyone wants to read through it: Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Section 41 Most of that goes way over my head. I can't understand why the MoD are unable to provide a service record with certain parts omitted if they come under the scope of Section 41. p.s. Reading this: MOD Service Records – frequently asked questions I understand it to mean that Section 41 only applies to medical records.
You applied via the info in the link with £30,date of birth and death cert and they replied section 41 applies?
yes did all that, they sent it all back in September saying it had been transfered to kew so got intouch with them with id number that i was given, got an email back 4 days before xmas telling me about the section 41 act so asked for an internal review
The Tank Museum has the war diary for the regiment that may give more details about your grandfather.
thank you for your help. the m.o.d let me look at my grandads service file for 38hrs before they closed them again till 2036. Wasnt allowed to see 10 pages of it though as classified.
