When is an advert not an advert ?

As a forum member who always reports suspicious postings (so that the moderators can check them out) I looked in vain on the FAQ page for guidance on what is considered advertising.

What has prompted this query is seeing what might be considered an advert from a company offering it's photographic services.

I had a look at the forum member's profile and immediately saw that he had previously posted on other matters and the offer of his company's service appeared to be 100% genuine, not at all pushy and very much a genuine effort to be helpful.

I am also in no way referring to any offers of professional help from existing and long standing forum members but rather what appears to be advertising from newbies without, as yet, any track record.

Would one of the mods care to comment ?

An unacceptable bit of advertising, is whatever we decide is unacceptable ;).

We've no solid policy against advertising at all really.
If people want to flog a particular service, particularly with a WW2 focus, then we're not going to object to an appropriate or relevant post. Never been overly snotty about it really.

    BUT

We all sort of know when it goes into Spam territory, and we are anti-spam.

If someone's an established member who also posts on other stuff as well as flogging their research/militaria/paintings/book/whatever, then we won't bat an eyelid. Pop it in your signature, fill your boots, but there is such a thing as rattling on a bit. It's not an arbitrary line, but it is there.

The photo/design service you mention Ron; may be beginning to skirt the latter territory...
I did put this in the opening thread of that section as it's an area that might well require the odd bit of pro help:
"I don't mind if some commercial services pop up and leave a post or two, but this needs to stay mostly amateur & friendly."

    A post or two...

    Seconded.
It is appreciated, particularly during what seems to be a wave hitting many forums.

After Hackers, my most guaranteed bile arousers are spammers and, in case you hadn't noticed, we get a fair share of them on this site.

I report my fair share of these bxxxxxxs ( sorry chaps!) and now, following on Von Poop's advice I don't even bother to make comment, other than a question mark to ask whether or not the posting was just an innocent plug or, as usual, someone trying to flog us something without paying for the advertising content.

I confess to having a vested interest in the spammer squashing and hasten to explain.

I run about a half a dozen Blogs and the one on which I spend most time is my old boy's club blog.

At least once a week I get an e-mail drawing my attention to the fact that "XXXXXXX" is trying to post something on the Blog that has nothing to do with club matters but that has everything to do with flogging drugs or sex.

Of course, the spam is squashed then & there and the post (and the poster) is marked as "Spam". It doesn't stop them, they are back next week under a different name & location but, at least to date, they have never managed to leave a posting on the blog.

I have to say that the Admin are pretty hot on spotting and eliminating these delightful chaps.

Please support your local forum by always questioning any doubtful posting you spot................... not this one, of course :)

I am by nature an early riser and so at 0545 hrs, the earliest I can access the forum, I am usually looking at my PC screen and seeing what's up.

I usually look at the ONLINE USERS box to spot who else is online at that silly hour and quite often I am the only one.

It is at this time of the day that the spammers come out of whatever hole they live in and I spend the next few minutes clicking the icon that will draw attention to their blatant advertising.

By the time I have had breakfast the moderators are normally onsite and the offenders have been efficiently sent packing and the site has been restored to it's usual spam-free environment.

I hasten to add that I seek and expect no thanks for flagging these bxxxxxxds.

As someone who runs various blogs and gets his share of similar attacks I just naturally just hate these internet leeches and so I am happy just to be able to mark their posts as "not wanted".

We, the forum users, are very fortunate in having such an spam-free environment and I echo the mods occasional plea for vigilance.

    End of sermon.

    Hi,

Just had What I think is a weird e-mail - it says its from WW2talk, but when I click on the first link to WW@talk it takes me to my posting on the subject it refers to.......but there is not another posting after it and I can't see the comment that it states in the e-mail.

I have not clicked on the second link in the mail as it raised my suspicion by not appearing on the WW2talk site!

Now I could be being very thick here - it is not unknown! - So I will not be offended to be told so, but if it is a scam I thought I should post to let others know.

    HERES WHAT I GOT.............

Not sure but I imagine this vilashraj (?) posted on the thread but then the mods found out it was a spammer-that's probably why you can't find his posting.
