Is there someone on the forum who lives in or near South Woodford and can provide me a photograph of the South Woodford War Memorial? I am especially interested in the names for WW2.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Pieter,

It seems as though I'm more than twelve years late in responding to your post, but better late than never, I guess.

I live in South Woodford, less than 500m from the WWII War Memorial at St Mary's Church. Unfortunately, the memorial has no names on it, as I discovered a few weeks back (Remembrace Sunday) - "lest we forget" seems to have no meaning without the names to remember. I decided that I had to do something about this, starting as close to home as possible.

There used to be a very small church in my road, but this was demolished in the mid-1970s, to make way for road widening. Fortunately, the WWII plaque was preserved, so I have started to research the eight men listed on it. That's how I stumbled upon your request.

Five of my eight men were in the RAF (Voluntary Reserve), but none in 142 Squadron, if that is your area of interest. I'm happy to help, if I can.

    Best regards, Philip

    Philip,

I will send Pieter F a PM alerting them to your post, asking them to return and help. Had some good success with a PM to Dutch members of late.

    PM explanation

If you hover over the name of the member in their avatar it will show a new text box and within is the date of their last logged visit. Some members "flag" their interest in a thread, which means they get a system alert. Once you have posted five times - a measure to stop spam - you can send a private message (PM) to members using 'Start a private conversation' accessed via your avatar. Such messages depend on their email given at registration is still valid. You can receive and reply to a PM already.

Thank you for your reply to my post Philip. I will have to dig deep to remember who this was about. Can you share those eight names with me as this might ring a bell.
