    Hi,

Can anyone tell me the date that the South Lancs were deployed to Burma from the UK?

Would they have sailed from Liverpool or the Clyde?

The Regimental website is quite basic - are there any other websites dedicated to the South Lancs in WWII? Or personal/family ones concerning service?

Have had a look at the Burmastar website and have picked up a couple of bits of info.

I am, like many, researching my grandfathers war history, but seem to have a gap from July 1943 to Feb 1945 (bit of a big gap!), ie from 2/4 volunteering for parachute training until the crossing of the Irrawady.

    Thanks in advance

Pete, how strange.... I was only having a pint with a mate last night whose dad served with the 2nd South Lancs in Burma and he asked me nearly the same question. Whilst I couldnt answer him there and then, I said i'd get back to him today.

At the start of the war the 2nd Battalion was in India, from where they returned to the UK. Jopining 29th Infantry Brigade they landed on Madagascar, East Africa on the 5/5/42, staying there until the 16/10/42

I summise that they returned to the UK from there before they left from Burma on the 12/2/44. They remained with 29th Infantry Divison until 6/4/44 when they moved to the 114 Indian Infantry Brigade, remaining in Burma theatre until 29/7/45

Given that the Regimental home town was Warrington, and they still had one battalion on Home Defence duties, I would put my money on Livepool being the point of departure.

    Hope this helps
    Phil

    Thanks Phil,

If your mate wants to contact me please tell him to do so - I have come across a couple of regimental photo's on the web and I can give him the url's. of where to find them.

Think a trip to Warrington is on the cards......

I am keen to find out what the regt. were doing between arrival in India and the Irrawady crossing - I have some small pointers that some members were part of Op. Thursday (Chindits) but the regt. doesnt show up on the list of participants.

    Regards
