I didn't have access to the forum for the last two days, did I post anything I shouldn't?

I got a long error message but no forum :( Anyway, it all looks like normal now.

I don't know if anything else was changed but I got a "Notification of Reply" to a thread I had posted in, something I was not able to receive prior. Long may it last.

    Otto, Adam and Co,

Many thanks for getting back up and running. I think several of us were getting withdrawal symptoms.

    Aye chaps.
Returning from some drinking in Larndan, I'm glad to see everything's settled.

Apologies we didn't quite announce the second big outage, but Otto got a window with tech-support on hand and sensibly seized the day.
You people's loyalty and understanding while the fiddling about goes on is a most flattering thing to the forum as a whole.

This new Server's a monster by the way, and I am V pleased that the notifications are now getting through to those that lost 'em. If we're lucky it'll also mean the registration emails will get through to the ISPs that bounced 'em (another background problem), and Owen and I can spend less time manually activating new bods.

As the man said - Onwards & Upwards!

That bleedin' garbled error message comes from when we close the forum; and the Portal, which is a piece of plug-in software, doesn't display the message it's supposed to.
If you get it again, navigate to another thread or the forum list (http://ww2talk.com/forum/ - just add '/forum' to the URL) and you'll get a message explaining why we're closed for any given reason.

Having said that, hopefully we won't have to close again for a bit ;).

Yes, well done to everyone who runs this site :salut: and the veterans for taking time to share invaluable info and answer silly questions. :salut::salut:

Just to pass on the info that here in the UK (in deepest Cockfosters) this site is completely off the air between 06:30 and 0645 every morning.

I've learned to live with it and do a bit of visiting other sites until ww2talk lets me back in again.

I would like to add my kudos for making this the #1 WWII site on the www. :cheers:Nothing of this caliber comes without first a visionary, then the contributions by many dedicated people. A special thanks to the Veterans :poppy: who are giving their firsthand accounts. I wish I had found this site sooner to have reduced my research time by half a year. A big thanks for steering me to get a unit diary.

This morning at 05:30 am the site was down for about 10 minutes in place of the usual (and expected) 06:30 am closure.

Can one of the mods tell me if this will now be the norm ?

    Thanks

    Ron

I think the change in time must be down to some change in US daylight saving time, Ron (we're hosted in the states).
Google seems to imply this - so the relative time will change again when our own clocks spring forward on the 25th.

Been trying to find the post where I explained why the site gets so inaccessible at a certain time every day, but haven't yet...
It's the site running backups and assorted other maintenance routines - I tried spreading the jobs out a bit, but it didn't appear to make any difference.

Ron , I've heard the saying 'Early to bed early to rise, makes a man healthy , wealthy & wise'.
    Is that your secret ?
    I'm still asleep at 05.30.

Thanks for that info, you have indeed gone to great pains on a previous occasion to explain why we have this "gap" and I have always appreciated and understood the reason for this glitch, my present query was just to clarify and save me time in the mornings.

Which leads me on to Owen and his query about my lifestyle

The older I get the less sleep I appear to need

It is a rare day that I am in bed before 12:30 am and it is equally rare for me to be asleep after 04:30.

What I completely fail to mention however is the time that I spend sleeping whilst watching TV -_-

By 05:30 I am at my PC and. after looking at my mail, ww2talk is my 2nd point of call, hence my being very aware as to what time you open the shop here at ww2talk.

Finally, as someone who occasionally visits our "sister" forum ww2f I see that they are about to celebrate 50,000 postings on that site.

Whilst wishing them all well, I have to admit that for both the quality of postings and the levels of service that we all get on this site, ww2talk has got to be the number one site, so will all concerned please take a well earned bow :D

George W. Bush altered daylight savings time for the US, and Canada followed. We go to Daylight Saving time 2 weeks before the rest of the world (happened yesterday) and return to normal time two weeks later then the rest of the world.
Apparently this was to allow for longer daylight for a longer time resulting in increased productivity etc etc.

Updates for servers were installed altering the Daylight saving time auto change date.

An update on the early morning downtime on this forum.

Here in the UK I am now getting a full 30 minutes closure taking place between 06:30 and 07:00.

As one of the old "If you're stuck with a lemon, make lemonade!" brigade I spend this time

    a. Scanning the internet and deleting the odd bits of spam from my blogs
    b. Visiting ww2f, sister forum that caters mainly for the US of A
    c. Catching up on my e-mails

More important, I suppose, is the fact that I now use this enforced down time to draft the odd response to a posting to this site, rather than just fire off a broadside that will inevitably find disfavour with certain parties :)

I would be interested to know whether anyone else is affected by the downtime.

    Ron
