    Hi there

Am trying to help a friend ... this is what we know about her father:-

    1. Name: Arthur Taylor.
    2. Born 13 March 1926 (but not registered/no birth certificate).
    3. Joined the Durham Light Infantry aged 16 but gave age as 18 - ?1942.
    4. Was later in the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry.
    5. Has a medal from the KSLI, for the Palestine troubles 1945-1948.
    6. Also the box: "A. Taylor KSLI" and "Service No. 14756526".
    7. Also on box: "GRI" ... don't know what this stands for.

But we have failed to find his record ... any help/information whatsoever will be gratefully appreciated. Many thanks in anticipation. Heather

P.S. I've duplicated this post, to 'catch' as many people as possible - apologies if I shouldn't have.

Have you tried contacting the KSLI museum in Shrewsbury and the DLI museum (near Durham?). Might not amount to anything but is always good to check off your list of options.

I think the GRI refers to King George VI (Georgius Rex Imperator if I remember my Latin correctly i.e. George King Emperor...)

Hello - When you say 'we have failed to find his records' have you applied to the MoD for a copy?

Not as yet, Drew5233. My friend subscribed to Military Records, Military War Articles & Forces History Data - Forces War Records and has not been able to locate her father in the search. I'm not sure if the site is 100% complete and, as such, he may not be there to find - that said, she has found all my relatives that I have given her the details of. Name on medal box is "A. Taylor" (A for Arthur) so he seems to have given his 'real' name on enlisting - however, with no birth certificate to prove or disprove his age, he was able to join up aged 16! So the next step, I think, will be for my friend to help her mother apply to the MoD.

    Don't bother with FWR .
The only place to get WW2 Service Records from is the MoD.

Just check on the basis which you signed up on Forces War Records. Apparently they charge you automatically IF YOU DON'T CANCEL.... Check bank statements to ensure you're not charged when you don't expect to be.....

Hi All ... yes, I'll tell my friend that KevinBattle .... I'm not sure how she signed up!

For the record, we contacted the Shropshire Light Infantry Museum as advised - giving the identical facts as first posted here. The Curator's reply was:-
"We hold no personal service records for the WW2 period; these are not in the public domain and remian in "closed" MoD archives. Next of kin may write for copies (if the original recipient is deceased) to : MoD, Mailpoint 555, Kentigern House, Brown St, Glasgow G2 8EX
Simply ask for a records’ search application form in the first instance. The box is the standard container that such medals were given in, with the King's cypher." So that has been ticked off & eliminated.

Many thanks to all of you for your invaluable help. A request always comes up trumps. Heather
