Sidearms. Who had the better weapons?

Everybody's pretty intrigued in the discussion of SMGs, grenades, tanks, rifles, aircraft etc, and that's understandable, but what about the sidearms?

The TT's, Lugers, Walthers and Colts etc. that were involved in WWII...which was the best sidearm to wield? And why?

If this was a poll, I would vote Colt .45

The reason is as follows, and this is highly scientific and with extensive research and testing (not), the others mentioned seem like water pistols in comparison.

I thought the Luger was a great pistol. And the Walther too?

The SU only had the TT, TK and revolvers :(

Luger and Walther were only 9mm though which is like a cap gun by comparison. Fine pistols without doubt, but my twisted logic based on nothing in particular tells me that bigger = better :D

Of course that's just my opinion which doesnt make it right.

What's your obsession with this deep military matter? A sidearm is as useful as the distance you can throw it :)

Being what I am I'd go for the Mauser Broomhandle, with the longer barrel you can throw it farther.

Bigger = better :D I've got to agree :D I suppose out of the modern pistols you'd be going for the Desert Eagle? A bit off topic, but it's huge :D

Lol :) Well, I dunno, everybody's debating SMG's and things, I know they're more fun, but sidearms have kind of been overlooked, don't you think? They were produced in millions, and when you were out of ammo for everything rapid firing, you grabbed your pistol. It's an awfully useful thing, actually :)

But if you look at it from your standpoint, then all of them fitted with silencers would make pretty good throwing material. :D

I've always enjoyed firing the Browning 9mm :)

Another thing that struck me with the 9mm, being relatively small, it fitted in the small of your back quite nicely when tucked into the back of your trousers.

    You stole my thunder.

I was going to comment that it was the Colt 1911, because after you missed all your targets, you could throw the thing. With it's large size and weight, if you hit someone, you'd do a lot more damage than with those other puny pistols. Plus, there was the added bonus of when you lost all that weight hanging on your hip, you can run faster.B)

My ultimate favourite of the sidearms of the war: The Browning Hi-Power
Browning Hi-Power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Reasons:
-Being a 9mm! (yes, I know it is lighter than .45 acp, but I think .45 is just not the caliber for a sidearm)
-Magazine capacity: 13 rounds! The first double stack magazine of the world!
    -Reliable
-Damn cool looking ("In all this exitement I kinda lost track of myself and I dunno wether I fired 13 rounds or only 12...")B)

No-one voting for the .455 Webley ? Such a beautiful cobby-looking thing and the lanyard sets it off just nicely !

You have a point! The Webley was/is a kicker, but... it is a revolver:unsure:
