Two of my grandfathers brothers fought in Sicily during the war. Both were in the 2nd Bn. Inniskilling fusiliers and both recieved the MM within a month of each other. Thomas(Tommy) Moore recieved his medal during the battle of Catinia at Lemon Bridge on Simeto river (Oct. 1943). William recieved his medal for action on the Paterno-Belpasso road (Nov. 1943). Can anyone flesh out the actions of the 2nd Bn. during the Sicily campagain? Both men were called back into action for Korea and unfortunately William was killed. Are there any forums or sites around for the Koeran conflict? I have attached a copy of a comic in which Tommy's story was featured,I hope it turns out ok. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2893&stc=1&d=1151059001 http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2894&stc=1&d=1151058570 Brian
I remember reading that when I was 10! Used to love those true life stories. 2nd Skins were in 13th Bde, 5th Div.(same as 2 Wilts) http://www.ww2battlefields.info/ 13 Infantry Bde 5th Divison 3.9.39 - 15.9.39 30.12.39 - 26.4.42 2.7.42 - 31.8.45 2 Cameronians 2 Inniskilling Fus (until 28.9.39 & from 30.11.39 - 14.7.44) 2 Wiltshires 13 Inf Bde Atk Coy (until 6.1.41) 13 Inf Bde Sp Coy (4.5.43 - 20.6.44) 5 Essex (from 14.7.44)) Haven't anything on them. Brian you sure you've the dates corrcet? that looks like the dates they were Gazetted not for the actions. 12th August 43 the 13th Bde were withdrawn to prepare for the Invasion of Italy. I can't help with the query I'm afraid but I am deeply jealous of the copy of Victor with your grandad on the cover. "Himmel!" "Stone the Crows!" "Aieeeeeee!" Great stuff. Cheers for that, Adam.
Your probably right about the dates Owen, I've took a look through what I've gathered together and it looks as if the actions took place in August. Well spotted! I visited the museum last year and got the usual lisit of contacts at the time.Tommy's wife is still alive and I've managed to get copies of records etc. from her though.
Cheers Owen, I haven't been on in a while and forgot my password. I then had a bit of trouble getting it reset.
Welcome back. Seems to be a 5th Div theme here with Natasha & 2Northamptons, stephen7 & 2 Cameronians and yourself.
Brian I've posted the whole chapter on 5th Div in Sicily here. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/99067-post14.html
Owen, Got a read through the chapter, very interesting. One point that comes through very clear, they didn't think a big lot about the Siclians. Some of the remarks wouldn't be exactly PC these days!
Brian just posted this on the wrong thread. Thought I'd leave it there and add it here too. Have you got these or will you soon be spending £7? Link to Tommy's MM Recommendation at TNA. Cheers Owen, I do have quite a bit on Tommy and a few bits and pieces on Willy. I do have a copy of the actions that led to the medals,I think the copies came from the regimental museum(obtained quite a while ago by my mother). I'm not sure they'ed be the same as the archive documents,do they contain much info?
Ignore my last question Owen, I've just seen the other thread and the example,I'll have to blow the cobwebs from the wallet.
Not sure if this thread is still active, but there is a good account of the Inniskillings in Sicily and Italy written by Sir David Cole - Rough Road to Rome. It gives some details of the battle for Lemon bridge. Jont

Assuming you don't have the citations let me know and I'll type both up for you. Cheers Andy (PM SENT)
Thanks Andy I'd be glad to see read them if it isn't too much trouble. I can't believe it's been that long since I started this thread, as they say it's funny how time slips away. Kind Regards, Brian
Hi Brian Attached copy of Lt Col O'Brien Twohig's report on that action, let me know if you have problems with it. (these reports were on fullscrap size paper) There are three pics, other to follow.
