There was a very interesting programme on Radio 4 a couple of months ago about this. The programme was structured along the timeline of the words used to describe the ailment. Shell shock, Battle Fattigue, Post Traumatic Stress and so on. It looked at how society viewes the sufferers and how that view has changed, but what was realy interesting was there was a lady from a PTSD charity (wish I could remember the names).

She councelled sufferers and talked about the different paths people go through to give themselves some form of forgiveness. The other thing she talked about was how long it takes people to seek help. Until the Twin Towers people lived with it, on average, for 15 years. Since then the time has come down as it is now more "socialy acceptable" (?!). The final suprise was that only a few months before the show went out she had a 90 year WW2 veteran come to her. His wife had just died and he finally admitted he couldnt cope. I hope he is doing well with the help of this excellent lady.
