I've been researching Operation Jubilee/Dieppe Raid for some time and have been trying to identify the RN casualties suffered during the day.

After the clash with the German coastal convoy, SGB5 is recorded as suffering crew casualties of 1 killed and 13 wounded. I have identifies the 2 Officers and 11 OR crew who were wounded, but have not been able to identify the crewmember who was killed. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Regards

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

I'm researching an LCI Captain who I believe was at DIEPPE. Where did you find the manifests? He went on to serve in SOE, so I am trying to map his war.

Any help you can give is much appreciated

    Hi Paul,

My crew lists aren't complete, but give me his name and I'll see if I've got any reference of him.

For the record no LCI's took part in the Dieppe raid, so he must have been on a different type of Landing Craft.

    Regards,

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

Fantastic, thank you. Sorry: I was Army, not Navy, so I am not sure of the correct terminology and crafts. He later went to SOE, and was a friend's father so I offered to look him up but have never drawn such a blank before. I have requested the Service record, but not returned yet.

His name is James William Jeffrey RNVR. He was HMS QUEBEC, and before that Dover Patrol. SOE record from TNA says he was in NORWAY and at DIEPPE.

Anything you can tell me about him would be much appreciated.

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

I've got a Lt Jeffrey RNVR (no first name) who was the boat officer off an LCA ('3') from 8th LCA Flotilla (HMS Prins Albert). It looks like this could be your man.

8th LCA Flotilla (Prins Albert) took part in Operation Anklet (Norway) on 26th-28th December 1941 and Operation Abercrombie (a failed raid at Hardelot, near Boulogne) on 20th-21st April 1942. Plus later Operation Husky (Sicily).

During the Dieppe Raid the 8th Flotilla landed No4 Commando who successfully overran a German coastal battery and withdrew. Whilst waiting offshore LCA '3' was near missed by artillery fire which wounded one crew member.

Document DEFE 2/339 at TNA mentions Lt Jeffrey's name, but doesn't have any other information on him.

    Regards,

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

That is fantastic, thank you! Really helpful. I'll go and research the 8th LCA Flotilla. Once I understand his skill set, I might have a better grasp of what he was doing for Special Operations (M) in Greece.

    Thanks

    Paul

hi Steve, you still looking for the KIA crewman of SGB5? I've not looked into that particular case and don't seem to have his name noted anywhere, but have only three names from the KIA, DoW and MPK without a craft associated. Email me and I'll reply with the three names and see if there are any clues between what you and I know about them. Cheers
