Sorry to throw an tangent in this one
my Gfather was in the RTR - originally (it appears) in 45 RTR as a territorial trooper attached to "Tank Re-oy Gp
XIV B list on 13.12.42 , then posted to
    40 RTR 13.2.43 then to
XII (ND) 26.10.43 (El Alamein perhaps??) then to
    40 RTR 5.12.43
ADV SQN 1 Rec??? (hard to read) Unit XIV 15.3.44
    then to 6 RTR 19.8.44
    WIA 17.4.45 Italy
    XiiNA 17.4.45
    DISEMBKD UK to
    YList (a) 6.10.46.

I was told he fought at Monte cassino but I cannot verify this through his paperwork mentioned above. Were any of these units fighting at Monte Cassino at this time. He never EVER spoke about his experiences and now as I care to ask, as with many its too late (25 years to late to be exact!!). I was also told his El Alamein experiences were horrendous, but again theres nothing in his war record ( I reckon the Data Protection Act meant parts of his war record werent sent to me ( only got it 3 days ago)). Its much shorter & far less comprehensive than those for WW1 relatives.

Can anyone through a little light on the names dates mentioned above at all?
    Many thanks

    Dave

Hi everyone - am hoping that someone can clarify the whereabouts of my grandfather who served in 45, 40 & 6 RTR. I can make some of the places out but not battles. Ia was informed he fought at El Alamein (second battle) and also went with 6 RTR into Itlay where he was wounded in a motorcycle accident that effectively ended his war.

I would specifically like to know if he fought at El Alamein and also if anyone could clarify his war in Italy - I think I can follow parts of it from 6RTR War Diary albeit that its a bit scant.

There are also endorsements on his record of service notably XIV B list - along with a few other X**** do these signify anything at all. I am told that he was withdrawn from battle at El Alamein due to exhaustion ( & having read some of the accounts I can fully understand that) (and also have done a fair bit of family history so am used to "warts & all"). So if someone could explain all that I would appreciate it. Have attached said file if someone could review & comment.
    Heres hoping
    Many thanks
    Dave

It would if the Australian X system worked for the British Army - unfortunately - it doesn't as the Kiwi system is closer

WellyDave - yes 45RTR did fight at El Alamein in 24th AB with 40 th and 50th RTR- he transferred to 40th RTR after Alamein - then wounded - ending up with 6th RTR along with 2nd and 8th RTR -

in 7th AB at the Gothic line - Google for " The Battle of Gemmano " - the Italian version and read of how they took a pasting there...

    Cheers
