A few questions which maybe someone can answer? Being next of kin, my Mother will need to apply for my Grandfathers Service Record, but we want it sent to me as I will be doing most of the research. Will the service records department send out records to an address different to that of the person who is applying? How do you make this known as I dont see anywhere on the form to do this? Also, do they send abroad, or do you have to pay extra? Is there an email address for the Service Records department. I've had a look, but cannot see one (although its quite possible that I overlooked it, im like that!). If there is an address, I can ask these questions myself of course! (I know there is a phone number, but im never around at office hours to be able to ring) Thanks
They will send to a different address, I have done this for 3 lots of records. Just put your address down. I'd bet a million pound they don't check anything regarding NOK. They just do it as a ticking box exercise to cover themselves regarding the data protection act. Ring them up about posting overseas, if you can. They are a very helpful and friendly bunch.
I have just read elsewhere that when you request the records, its not a scan or photocopy that you recieve, but a typed copy, which may not include all info. If you need something specific, you have to request it. Is this true? How do you know what to request? Can you request 'everything'?
Typed sheets are what used to be sent out years ago. Nowadays everyone I know who has got service records gets scans of the originals.
When you request the records, be sure to ask for the FULL records. Have a look in my gallery to see some of the records I received for my father. Lesley
The ones we requested were sent overseas (Ireland) and they were fine with that. I do not recall having to pay anything extra for that. And as Owen said they were scans, not typed. In some ways typed may have been better as some of the handwriting is difficult if not impossible to read!!!!
Address to send the request to is different for Army/Air Force/Home Guard etc. This is actually on part 2 of the application (service specific form - make sure you complete the correct one). The records are the same price no matter where you are - the ones I ordered were sent to Canada and they were still £30. https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records#service-records-of-deceased-service-personnel Army specific address to send requests to is: The Army Personnel Centre MS Support Unit, P & D Branch Historical Disclosures, MP 555 Kentigern House 65 Brown Street GLASGOW G2 8EX Wayne
