    From the miscellaneous entries section of a WW2 service record, RASC;

    (3) o/s= -/189 to 2 Sept 44
    (4) A.&S. GP. 25C

    I had thought o/s was overseas, but record indicates Home service during 44, therfore is it on strength? What would 189 indicate?
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions

    Hmm.
    OK I've worked out one of them.
    (4) is Age and Service Group 25c.
    As I noticed that this was entered as such in his discharge papers, even though he wasn't 25, so I'm not sure what 25c classes him as.

    Am wondering whether 189 refers to WO 189 which is "research facilities", though that is a wild guess. Quite why a mobile Field Bakery would be allocated to a research unit is beyond me, barring guinea pig duties.

    Hi Revere60

    A&S GP 25C is age and service group calculated from age plus length of service to provide a demob\discharge date. My Dad was 28c and demobed 10 Sept 1946. Others will provide more detail I am sure. Brian

    Thanks Brian.

    There is a large gap in the service record coinciding with the period May 1942 (on discharge from hospital) to Sept 1944, covered only by the phrase "ENTRY OMMITTED" (sic)

    Has anybody come across this phrase in use before, or have knowledge of why service records might be edited in this way?

    You might find this of interest, a table from Government booklet “Release and Resettlement, An Explanation of Your Position and Rights” showing how groups for staged release were to be calculated. Time of service in the T.A. before the outbreak of war added additional service time, allowing earlier release.

    That makes sense now, the number is not his age but his relative order of release. It matches the date of enlistment cross reffed with his birth year.
    One mystery solved at least!
    Thanks
