i have my fathers service records, he was captured at arnhem on thje 21st september 1944, ive uploaded a part i dont understand can anyone tell me what the numbers mean in the 4 squares mean? thanks
Could it be a stamp? As for the numbers the number of days from date he was 'missing' and when he was 'released by Allied forces'.
Hi, The numbers in the box are noting information gleaned from the army “census” taken in early September 1944. The 25 is his Age & Service Group - used to calculate post war Class A release date from the army. A matrix was used - as an educated guess I’d say he was released under Class A about April/May1946. The -/307 is the number of days of overseas service he had accumulated by early September 1944 - not of immediate relevance to him at the time but of use to others in calculating Python eligibility (repatriation to U.K. after 4 years service overseas). ah yes makes sense now he was born in 1918 so the age is right and he served from 1938 onwards. thx for that
Courtesy of the late Ron Goldstein, here's a copy of the matrix that was used to work out the Age & Service Group Number:
Thanks for posting. I didn’t want to complicate matters for the OP by posting my own copy. Pre war service didn’t count - service calculated from Sept 1939. My father was also a pre war regular serving on the outbreak of war born 1918 and in A&S group 25. Steve
