Hello All, I hope somebody out there may be able to help? I'm doing m best to transcribe a service record for a friend and am having trouble with the last page! The bits I'm struggling with are for the time the man in question was taken out of the field to the 21st BMH until he joined 155th Provost Company. Any help would be appreciated. David
David, 21 British General Hospital was at Dinapore up until January 1945 after which it went to Calcutta. I read: Admitted 21 BGH Reclassified Scale D Class 1A Discharged from 21 BGH Reinstated as ? To 65 ? Rest Camp on repat (repatriation) to UK. Python (this was a type of leave to do with a soldier's WW2 service time being concluded). Taken on strength X. 8. A. ? on repat Reclassified Scale D Class 1A Here is a thread explaining the Python leave: Python & Lilop Leave I am interested in the 1st Essex as they were part of the 23rd British Infantry Brigade and trained as Chindits. If I can help more with anything, let me know. Steve
Hi Steve, Many thanks for your response, the second line still remains a mystery! The chap in question is Pte/Tpr James Tarpey (#4625391), he started in the 8th Duke of Wellingtons then transferred to 163rd RAC (Sherwood Foresters) before being transferred to 1st Essex 24th Dec 1943 until 18th Aug 1944. Any information you have on that time would be great, It may fill in some gaps as he never spoke about his time in WW2. Regards Dave
That could fit as he was in the SPL Force Prov Unit prior to being admitted the 21st BGH the 155th P.Coy Just after?
To me the second line starts with a word beginning with R and (by comparison with line one), finishes again with adm i.e. admission.
"Reverts on adm", linked to the "Reinstated on disch" farther down? Did he have a higher rank or appointment prior to hospitalization?
Hi David, The dates you give for James' time with the 1st Essex are classic dates for someone who served with the 23rd British Infantry Brigade around the towns of Imphal and Kohima in India during the first half of 1944. This Brigade was initially preparing for service in Burma as part of the second Chindit operation, but was held back by General Slim and used to disrupt the Japanese lines as they attempted to capture the above mentioned towns.
Thanks all, Blutto/Kevin I'll go with that, It makes sense given the surrounding lines. Looks like it refers to his pay, paid to unpaid and vice versa. Charley - Can do if you like but it just says India and a series of dates, I'll copy it and add it on Regards Dave
