Sergeant "Whitemark" 2 and 6 KOSB, 1944-45

Discussion in 'Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy' started by Keith Alexander, Dec 31, 2024.

  1. In Robert Woollcombe's "Lions Rampant" he identifies a character as "Whitemark", a veteran of 2 KOSB in India with a "medal and a rough reputation". Initially a Corporal in another company he becomes Sergeant of Woollcombe's 7th platoon, 6 KOSB in September 1944 and in November 1944 takes command of 9 Platoon. After that he disappears from the narrative. I assume the medal would have been a GSM for service on the NWF.

The author has used other names for his fellow officers i.e. "Duncan" is Captain Norman Rollo (KIA 1944), and Whitemark is also apparently a false name but could he be located by the events i.e. he replaces a Sergeant McEwen WIA in September 1944 and takes command of another platoon (9) in November 1944?

I realise he may have deliberately confused these events to throw us off the scent but Whitemark is not a bad character in the narrative so I assume he has not strayed far from the truth.

    best regards
