As per the title, I am looking for any information on this chap who is named on the Second World War memorial from Prescot Grammar School. Though predominantly a Great War researcher, I occasionally look into the men of the Second World War from Prescot, and William is proving to be quite elusive He attended Prescot Grammar School from 1925 to 1929. I found his entry in the 1939 Register living in Cross Lane, Whiston, this showing his DoB of 02/10/1913 which fits in with the School dates. I have a death registration in June 1941 in Salford for man of the same age. That's it. He doesn't appear to be commemorated by CWGC and I can't find anything else on him anywhere Over to you guys, anything found will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Stephen England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007 Name: William A T Day Death Age: 27 Birth Date: abt 1914 Registration Date: Jun 1941 Registration district: Salford Inferred County: Lancashire Volume: 8d Page: 666 This would appear to be the death details of your man, a copy of the certificate would show what his cause of death was The only birth that is a good possibility is: England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915 Name: William A Day Mother's Maiden Name: Anderton Registration Year: 1913 Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec Registration district: Salford Parishes for this Registration District: View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District Inferred County: Lancashire Volume: 8d Page: 127 As he has a civil death registration I would assume he died within the UK, probably close to home from either an accident or an illness, again the death cert would help resolve that. TD
Hmm. The 1939 Register entry raises more questions than answers: 1939 REGISTER TRANSCRIPTION 29 Cross Lane, Whiston, Lancashire NAME DOB OCCUPATION William A T Day 02 Oct 1913 Electrical Production Engineer Alice Day 05 Jun 1881 Unpaid Domestic Duties [m] Herbert S Groarke ? Aug 1915 Elec Copper Refining Labourer Jessie M Jones (Groarke) 22 Dec 1922 Cable Wire Examiner Alice is described as 'married'. Looking at the original image her entry has been crossed out in red pen and a note added "see Page 20". Searching for her reveals: 1939 REGISTER TRANSCRIPTION 29 Cross Lane, Whiston, Lancashire NAME DOB OCCUPATION Alice Day 05 Jun 1881 Udd Same address (and still 'married'), but living alone seemingly. It seems highly likely that she is the mother of William A T Day, but I can't connect her with the William A Day, born 1913 in Salford.
Wonder if this is her death cert details: England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007 Name: Alice Day Death Age: 71 Birth Date: abt 1879 Registration Date: Sep 1950 Registration district: Liverpool North Inferred County: Lancashire Volume: 10d Page: 224 TD

Theres nothing there that tells us his DoB?? or a way to find it and corroborate the death details above?? Hes the only William A T Day I have found that died between 1939 & 1945 TD
The more I look into this, the more obscure it seems to become. Perhaps worth contacting Prescot School? Their admission registers would make interesting reading, assuming they still exist.
Try contacting somebody on this Facebook page for Philip's Cemetery to take a look at the grave. Friends of Philips Park Cemetery Public Group | Facebook
Hi everyone, the William Alfred Tom Day buried in Philips park cemetery was aged 22 years. His occupation was - Electrician Abode given as: 16 Orient road, Pendleton, Salford. Edward Birch buried 27th Aug 1936, son of Thomas William & Elizabeth Ellen Birch nee Wray. He died age 22 years. Occupation was Metal turner. Abode given as: 83 Ascot road, Newton Heath. At this moment in time i can find no connection between these men, maybe they were schooled together at some-point? I'll keep looking. M&SFHF
It's just a thought, but these guys may not be related or connected at all. Local authorities sometimes put unconnected people in the same grave. I've recently read to about people selling a plot on to somebody else when all the spaces hadn't been used.
Earlier i post "William Alfred Tom Day buried in Philips park cemetery was aged 22 years.." this is incorrect and should be 27 years old. A typo error by me, sorry for any confusion. M&SFHF
Amberdog45, he lived in Salford and that is a separate city to Manchester where he was buried. Salford have many communal council owned cemeteries, i couldn't see them paying another council to bury him? There has to be some personal/family connection i thik, we just haven't found it - YET! M&SFHF
Here's the Birch household: 1939 REGISTER TRANSCRIPTION 83 Ascot Road, Manchester, Lancashire NAME DOB OCCUPATION Elizabeth E Birch 15 Oct 1883 Unpaid Domestic (widow) May Gardner (Birch) 10 Jun 1916 Electrical Worker Sorry, this record is officially closed Ada Carey 21 Oct 1921 Printer Packing Out I thought William Day was perhaps courting May Birch (I've found a lot of men staying with their in-laws/in-laws to be), but she married James Gardner at Newton Heath, St. Wilfrid in 1941. Ada was born Birch. Not much help
I checked the headstone this morning. It's really difficult to read and the engraving hardly shows up on photos. Anyhow, best i can make out the inscription is as follows:- [Top of headstone] Edward Dearly Beloved Son of Thomas William & Elizabeth Ellen Birch Who died August 22nd 1936 Aged 22 years Thomas Wiiliam father of the above & Beloved Husband of Elizabeth Ellen Birch Died July 24 1939 Aged 65 years [Gap] [Bottom of headstone] And William Alfred 'Alf' Beloved Son of William & Alice Day Who died April 18th 1941 Aged 27 years Resting
