I've been going through the information you have supplied and looked at the suggestions on ancestry

I now know I have the right person as it's been linked back to my aunts and uncles that I know their names but had never added them to my family tree.

I can 100% confirm it is my grandfather and even more, my great grandfather served in ww1 and have traced his military history partly.

Thanks for your help but it's definitely the right person

I'm hoping that his information can be found.

If he was a 1060 boy then it could be a great start.

    It's strange that I was a tankie

I've found that he died age 46 and Thomas Mann Upton might be his dad.

    Investigation needed

    I'm looking for Thomas upton
    Born 23 Feb 1918
    Died 25 Feb 1964

He married Margaret Taylor in Oct 1938

I've uncovered from a birth certificate of my mother that his job was listed as
    10601030 Trooper in Recce Regt.

I know from cencus records in 1921 his father was also Thomas upton and his mum was Mary E Upton.

So I'm looking for 10601030 trooper Upton T

    Hope this helps

So I’m guessing the Thomas Mann Upton we researched earlier is not your great grandfather?

The 1921 Census I posted here previously shows Thomas Mann Upton single and still living at home with his parents.

Thomas upton recce, his dad is also Thomas upton

I believe that it might be my great grandfather but once I get the certs I should be able to confirm it

The link to my uncles and aunts were in the history of Thomas Mann upton so it has to be linked

The fact that Thomas Mann upton died in Bradford but probate was read in Liverpool

I think a lot more confirmation on certs is the only way forward

Lot of rabbit holes on Ancestry etc, very hard to keep track sometimes.

“My” 1921 Census again, no infant son Thomas, no wife Mary, so you must have found another one. :)

I think the first 1921 census is the correct one as the dates seem to match better

    What do you think?

1921 Census was taken 19 June.

Thomas’s birthday is 23 February 1918, that would make the first one the most likely, I agree. Give or take the 4 days between 19 and 23, his age of 3 yrs 4 months is a much better fit.

The Thomas in your second link is 6 yrs 7months - that would make his birth December 1914, way too old.

But then you turn another corner in this family tree lark and there’s another bloody twist waiting to get ya! :D

Peg in the sand and then work from that - the service record from TNA usually gives hard and fast links

Combination of either Nok, Address, Subject DoB - working back from these using Gene sites eliminates most of the dead end/red herrings.

Yes - I know the wait for a service record is chaffing but it clears up so much and allows targeting of expense going forward.

Yes - I know there are some who enlisted with false details - but this is usually DoB rather than a complete new identity - remember at the time rationing and national identity documents were a thing so say using a brother or strangers documents would mean that the civilian would have immense problems going forward in day to day life if authority thought they were in the forces.
