Hi everyone, I am researching a young soldier who died in 1947, I need to know what his unit was doing when he died, suspecting that he may have died of an accident or disease perhaps. SAPPER C . LAWSON Service Number: 19131706 Regiment & Unit/Ship - Royal Engineers - 1018 Port Operating Sqn. Date of Death - Died 15 September 1947 Age 18 years old Buried or commemorated at HAMBURG CEMETERY 9A. G. 3. Germany Country of Service - United Kingdom Additional Info - Son of John Lawson, and of Hannah Lawson, of Pentre, Flintshire. Personal Inscription - NOT GONE FROM MEMORY, NOT GONE FROM LOVE, BUT GONE TO OUR FATHER'S HOME ABOVE. R.I.P. Any help to tell his story would be appreciated, many thanks in advance, Mavis Williams.
The March 1948 Royal Engineers Journal refers to 1019 Port Operating Company. From the first article, on pg.11, in the issue on a bridge's removal near Hamburg: https://www.nzsappers.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/1948-March.pdf There is a thread here too that refers to them as a Port Operations Company on D-Day. I note another member of the unit died a month before. From: Alfred Adams and Casualty Details | CWGC I note a Royal Pioneer Corps officer died the day before and is buried next to him. Thank you once again, you've really helped me this week, I am so thankful for this forum, you have all been a boon to me throughout my research. I do appreciate it. Kind regards, Mavis
