Hi there, I'm trying to find out some information about a relative of mine. He was a sapper in the 2nd Bomb Disposal Coy., Royal Engineers and died on the 11th of January 1941. Many thanks in advance
Hello and welcome. For info: George Lincoln http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2434302/LINCOLN,%20GEORGE Lesley
I knew I shouldn't have stopped for that swig of beer... The photo was pretty straight forward - just searched "Royal Engineers 11th January 1941" and it was right there. The info is going to be the tricky part
Another chap that day died too http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2434332/ROLLS,%20EDWARD%20JOHN Plus the chap in the photo J F Cook, 2191836
"No 2 B D Group covered South Eastern Command and was based at Tunbridge Wells. The C.R.E. was Lt Col S C Lynn RE with No 12 Coy at Horsham, Sussex, No 17 at Sevenoaks and No 20 also in Tunbridge Wells." http://www.bombdisposalclub.org.uk/BD_history.htm Are we to presume that he was killed in Croydon, based on the info so far?
"During the night of 11th January 1941, 26 incendiaries landed on the Hospital" http://www.ezitis.myzen.co.uk/mayday.html Quite a few assumptions on my behalf so far, but might be worth further investigation. On the other hand I might be a million miles away
Thanks for the info so far. I will ask my mother where George died as he was a relation of hers. I do recall that he was due to come home the day after this incident and instead a telegraph arrived to say he had been killed causing my grandmother to suffer a miscarriage.
Here are a few more details. The photo of the school in the book I took about 12 years ago, so it could look quite different now. Google Street view should show you the school playground where he died as it is today.
